Description
This is the fourth and last character that I added for my Legacy of the Assassin, Nick Olas.
He was drawn by
Nick Olas is a shipwright and a swordsman under the employment of the Olas Family Ship Industries.
Appearance
Nick appears as a young man with flaming red hair and sharp blue eyes with a fair skin complexion. Aside from his complexion, Nick likes to wear short-sleeved Hawaiian/vacation shirts, his favorite being blue, unbuttoned, and with a pair of jeans and straw sandals, Nick's one true piece of apparel is his gray bucket hat that he wears constantly, even through battle. While he wears clothes for the weather on specific islands, Nick's hat is something that can never be missed as he won't part with it. At times, Nick will also have a tool belt around his waist and often be messing with something in his hands that he then puts inside the pockets of the tool belt. He also carries around a bôkken or wooden sword, usually in one hand or on his back tied by a piece of string or a piece of rope that he uses to bash people if they get too rowdy.
Personality
Nick can be brash, loud, and otherwise appear as a rather hot-blooded youth who acts before he thinks. While he normally acts “foolish” and can be considered nothing more than a young man who needs to calm down, Nick is passionate and extremely loyal to anyone he vows his loyalties to. His passionate side can often blind him to what’s going on around him and to anyone’s word as he will charge in first and not stop until he’s finished whatever he sets his mind to do. Due to his passionate side, people tend to think Nick is irresponsible and that he’s no good at doing things that take patience or follow a set of orders for long. He’s also seen as rather rowdy and is known to have a violent nature when he reaches his limits, not fearing anyone while enraged.
The reality, however, has Nick as a young man who has a hard time saying what’s really on his mind, often saying something either very rude or straightforward (a bad habit since he was small). It takes Nick quite a bit to work up the nerve to really say what he means, but once said, he will not take back whatever he has said. He often worries about others more than he does about himself, and is dependable towards anyone that needs his help. He will protect anyone he cares about and will never allow those he cares about to be insulted should someone dislike them (the people he cares about). He loves animals (especially his pet/partner the Thieving Ferret, Jojo) and normally gets along with any animal he meets. Nick often helps those who are in need and is famous for always helping an old lady cross the street, helping anyone who’s injured, and normally doing what he can for anyone that needs help before going back to what he was doing. Due to this, many people like him and can overlook his usual self as they know that he is in fact a very kind young man.
Nick does have his faults, however, and they can often cause his sister, Emma, trouble when Nick’s passions get him over his head. Nick is a gambler, and will often try to get as much gold as he can through gambling by trying to gamble away small things that belong to other people. Nick is also a bit of a thief, and usually takes a bit of extra cash for his gambling habit or if needs extra on whatever project he's currently working on. He can also be a little overprotective of his sister or women in general, making it clear he'd never harm one even at the cost of his life. Nick can get so passionate over any of his projects, in fact, that he can wear himself out by trying to finish said project over resting. The only other thing to note is that Nick will fly off the handle if his bucket hat gets touched by anyone he does not deem as worthy or clean.
Relationships
Work
Nick works as a shipwright and carpenter, often working wherever he’s needed to alleviate any of the work. He is often asked to run errands by everyone in the shipyard, and the rest of the shipwrights know Nick as a dependable member of their “family.” Nick often joins the rest of the group for drinks at the bar after work or for lunch, enjoying his time with the other shipwrights.
Friends
Nick has a few friends in the local town he hangs out with. Most of these are the local delinquents and some of the people considered by the Upper People of St. Sol as the lower cast of society. His one true friend, however, is his pet and partner the Thieving Ferret known as Jojo. Both the ferret and the master get along extremely well and Nick often employs Jojo as his means to steal from others when he feels the need to gamble. Jojo seems to appreciate Nick, and likes to sleep under the bucket hat that the redhead wears. Nick even makes the ferret outfits for islands that would be too rough for Jojo, and Jojo acts as an assistant for Nick when he's on a project of some kind by bringing him tools.
Family
Nick’s family relationship is difficult as his mother, father, and elder sister barely paid attention to the youngest son of the family. To get any attention, Nick would often build things at home and show them off, hoping that they would give him some sort of recognition. However, his parents and older sister would often turn away thinking that his skills were nothing more than wasted in such acts. After a certain incident, Nick was then forced to work for the family's business under constant supervision (while he likes the workers, he doesn't like that he's not free to choose his own path).
The only person Nick has had any comfort with in his family is his younger twin sister, Emma Olas. Though Emma acts as the level-headed and responsible one when around Nick, Nick cares for her so deeply that he will appear out of nowhere the moment he senses she’s in danger. During their childhood, Nick would often protect Emma from people bigger than either and Nick often tried to cheer her up after the events that befell the two. For her part, Emma cares just as deeply for Nick and though she calls him a “fool” or an “idiot” for his rather irresponsible actions, she knows that there is no one she could trust more with any task than her brother.
Abilities and Powers
Nick is a very nimble and experienced swordsman, having had to deal with pirates or rowdy Marines ever since he was small. Nick usually carries a wooden sword with him to deal punishment, and can actually cut people and objects with the wooden sword if he really wants to (those with knowledge of Haki note that this makes Nick very compatible with the Color of Arms Haki). Due to being taught an early age on how to make blueprints, Nick has an amazing eye for detail and can even tell when something is amiss off-hand after one quick glance (at one point, he found a damaged part of a new ship and warned that it would not sail, which it promptly sank when the owner disregarded Nick's warning). This eye for detail also comes into play when he is in a fight as he can find small breaks in defenses as well as opportunities when he finds weak points or to mimic the same movements as his opponent.
Nick is physically powerful in his own right as he can do several things regular humans can’t (such as leaping several stories high or carrying a boulder several times his own weight). His strength, while not at the level of some superhuman pirates or Marines, has made him still a force to be reckoned with as he can take down large groups by himself if the need arises. He also has an impressive luck, and winning gambles comes almost naturally to him, though no one knows how this happens. Nick is dexterous, and can use several swords in order to mimic any certain move or combat style that he has seen or is shown at least once.
Nick's greatest asset, however, is his super-genius level engineering/carpentry. With only a few materials and a rough blueprint, Nick can build just about anything he sets his mind to. He can even improve on designs that were considered perfect by the original creator/owner if given the resources to do so. Thanks to some comics he has read, Nick has been able to even recreate technology that is close to being fictional into a reality. While he had a rough time in his youth and told to always stick to the blueprints, he has been shown to be very creative after he and Emma left their toxic family behind.
Techniques
Nick has mastered several techniques over the course of his travels but has several original tricks that he uses in a fight.
Single Sword Techniques
Bamboo Cutter: Nick charges forth and unleashes a powerful slash that can neatly cut through most opponents.
Bamboo Gale: Nick uses all of his strength to unleash a powerful blast of air pressure that can knock a large group down.
Bamboo Climbing Strike: Nick leaps over his opponent and strikes their head before landing and unleashing another strike on their exposed back.
Bamboo Drill Slash: Nick charges forth, spinning and striking everything in his path.
Bamboo Rising Fang: Holding his sword with the blade behind him, Nick unleashes an uppercut-like strike against his opponent as he jumps upward.
Two Sword Techniques
Ironwood Breaker: Nick positions both swords behind him, and unleashes a powerful downward strike.
Ironwood Gale: An improved version of the Bamboo Gale.
Ironwood Drill Slash: An improved version of the Bamboo Drill Slash
Ironwood Maximum: Nick unleashes a series of slash at his opponent.
Sword Drawing Techniques
Unbreakable Ironwood Cutter: Nick first sheathes two swords, and lowers his center of gravity as much as possible before rushing forth and slashing at his opponent with two swords.
Unbreakable Climbing Strike: Nick sheathes his sword and leaps into the air, before spinning towards his opponent and slashing at them at the last possible moment.
Inventions
Nick has invented several rather interesting devices and vehicles over the course of his travels. This is but a small list of items Nick has crafted during that time:
Mini-Safety Jet-Pack: Miniature device that has allowed Nick roughly three minutes of floating and is used more as a parachute when Nick free falls from a high location.
Quick Grapple: A grappling gun with a hook that Nick has fashioned into a bracelet. It is capable of holding up to five hundred pounds and the cable extends roughly thirty feet.
Short Voyage Vehicle; Little Lucky: A small paddle boat with a motor that can be used to enter areas that normal ships can't normally dock in. It is very sturdy and can carry up to four people or a large amount of inventory.
Mini-Flying Spy Vehicle; Sky Vision: A small flying vehicle specifically made for Jojo to use. It is capable of flying nearly ten stories high and can either be controlled remotely by Nick or driven by Jojo. Perfect for espionage or reconnaissance.
Extreme Racing Ship, Wave Rider 5: A racing ship that Nick created specifically for speed and races. It is made with a metal exterior, making it capable of withstanding even sonic speeds. It is shaped like a dolphin and can even dive into water for a short period of time. It has later become part of a special invention that Nick employs with the help of another vehicle.
Power Arm Enhancer, Gorilla Guns: A machine Nick created to enhance a normal person's strength by a hundredfold. The arms look like those of a gorilla and are dexterous enough that they can handle delicate work along with heavier work.
Amphibious Fighting Tank, Ocean Roar 6: An amphibious tank in the shape of a toad that Nick build for when fights get tough and to keep others who can't fight like him safe. It is able to cross through both water and land, and the shots fired can knock even an elephant out cold. It is part of a special invention that Nick employs with another vehicle.
Deep Sea Fighter, Poseidon 11: A very large fighting robot that is the combination of the Wave Rider 5 and the Ocean Roar 6. This invention came about after Nick had read comics involving Sora, Warrior of the Sea, and wanted his own fighting robot. The Poseidon 11 is capable of forming a trident referred to as “Deep Blue” and employs a large shield known as the “Squall Shield” for defenses. It is loaded with miniature machine gun turrets on its shoulders, and the left arm can convert into a cannon with the same power output as shots from the Ocean Roar 6. The Poseidon 11's looks are based off of a gladiator and even sports a dashing retractable blue cape on its back that it can shorten or extend during battle.
History
Past Story
Born in St. Sol in the Grand Line, Nick comes from a long line of shipwrights who were of the belief that the true measure of a shipwright was their skill in making the ship. To make matters wore for Nick, his family (the Olas) were considered the leaders of the shipwrights with this mindset and considered anything “creative” as a pointless endeavor. As a child, rather than storybooks or tall tales, Nick was taught how to read blueprints and was strictly enforced to follow the rules along with his younger twin, Emma. Nick, however, did have a flair for making objects and harbored a wish to create the most amazing ship that the world had ever seen. To that end, Nick did the unthinkable for his society and entered an area of the island known as “the pit.”
There in the pit, Nick met with many of the shipwrights and scholars of the island who had been turned to outcast by the other residents above them. Nick soon became friends with many of the residents there, and for a time, he would visit the people down there to learn about things outside of building ships. Nick even went out of his way to help build devices to make living in the pit far more bearable, and was shown how being creative was not a bad thing as his family would make it seem. This, however, came to a head when his elder sister, Circe, discovered that Nick was going to the pit and mingling with “the trash.” Nick was severely punished for his actions, and was forced to work at his family's shipyard under constant supervision.
On his fifteen birthday, while still toiling away in the shipyard, Nick discovered a strange looking creature half drowned from a storm the day prior. This creature turned out to be a ferret, and Nick took the creature in to nurse it back to health with Emma's help. The two soon discovered once the ferret recuperated that it had a penchant for stealing things from unsuspecting victims, which Nick found funny and decided to keep the thieving ferret. Naming it Jojo, Nick found the creature to be far more intelligent than any normal ferret and soon the two became inseparable. Jojo would bring in a change of pace for Nick for the next 2 years until a certain ship arrived at his family's shipyard requesting their ship to be fixed.
