DescriptionSo I pretty much worked on this all day, seeing as it's my day off. I've got a trade and commission to work on, so this'll be the only personal art for a while yet.Not sure who all remembers him, but here's my character Di. Out of all my characters I probably draw him the most. Not sure why! I've definitely tweaked his design a little bit; if anyone remembers his reference sheet . He's big and intimidating and I wanted him to look it, so I've fixed his proportions, changed his horns, and. . . well just did a lot of minor tweaks that I think helped a lot.
This image uses the same gradient map as my other most recent pic (Drejrael). I was going to color it, but then I decided I don't know what color Di really is (since I want to change that too), so have the gradient map.
I apologize for the lazy rain. . . I originally made hundreds of dots to create rain and then realized I had done it straight onto the picture. It took me about two hours to color over all of the dots and by the time I was done, I really wasn't motivated to make rain anymore.. .

I love how intense the value contrast is, it's great for a grey-ish dragon! People are often afraid of putting straight black as a value, or shading darker colours that like one below their base hue, and the work always suffers

Thank you! Honestly, this character isn't really grey but the picture looked sooooo gooood in this palette! I usually don't use black myself, but I have to agree with you in that there are a lot of people whose work could be better augmented if they were willing to go darker with their shading.

I believe this is my all-time favorite of yours, Shin. While you may be able to say that the colors used here are generally somewhat tame and not very bright, I believe that's exactly what really makes this amazing. Not only does the character fascinate me, but the perspective is just so perfect, and as always, your painting looks perfect. Between the rain and the ripped flesh, that glare of absolute hatred and the mood that is portrayed here, honestly, I'd have to say this is for sure one of your best in my opinion.

do you begin with the line art first or just paint some random colorsΒ and smack some detail on it?

When I do paintings like this one, I first start with a sketch. A long time ago, I used to start with a very vague sketch that is light and can barely be made out. You can see my process with this kind of sketch here at this walk through I made ---> shinerai.deviantart.com/art/Prβ¦
lately I've been a lot more comfortable with using lineart. Since I do this all on one layer, I end up coloring over it anyway. Though on some of the edges or details on the face and ears (like in this picture), you can see that the appearance of lineart tends to remain c:

I looked at the reference sheet ad noticed that he was supposed to be black... it doesnt bother me at all, just saying that this design looks friggin gorgeous!!! I love his wounds and Ilove his angered face!!! still those wounds must burn like hell when its raining, makes me cringe...

That's really wonderful, I love how the red of his torn flesh is the only color that really stands out along with his eye, it makes for a very powerful image. ^_^ The wounds look so real, too.. Very impressive! I'm loving it ^_^Β

I love the improvements and tweaks from your original reference sheet. I think what mostly brings about the "intimidating" factor is the improvement in muscle and gore apparent in his reference sheet. It was there but the fact that you made it seem even more real in this drawing makes him much more gruesome features. I love that he has three ears as well.
Also the matte finish of the drawing gives it a high quality and the hazy features of his wings and slithering body just add to the overall gruesome persona, as if he is slinking in the middle of a cold, rainy night hiding in shadows and seeming to be invisible. The only time it becomes apparent he is right beside you is when the lightning flashes. Wonderful work; it has a lot of great things going on at once, some implied, some in the craftsmanship of your digital work ethic.
