Description This is a drawing that I outline by hand then took a photo of it and put it on the computer to color (if anybody was wondering about the background--that is the paper)

So, I finally got around to coloring this practice sketch of Basil. I have quite a few more of him just sitting around waiting for color and I'm sure I will get to them all eventually.

Not sure if I'm happy with the color of his fur....

Eh, whatever. Enjoy!

Basil is from the movie The Great Mouse Detective (c) Disney
Basil of Baker Street (c) Eve Titus

XD That's so great that Basil is so loved by people around the world! This site makes me wish that I had not forgotten so much Japanese. I took a few years of it and was actually pretty good at it at the time but I haven't used it in so long.

Yeah, and I noticed it's geocities, but because it's a foreign site, it wasn't removed like the rest of them. I agree it's great that Basil is loved by people all over the world. I'm so fascinated with the merchandise in different countries, too. I had to use a translator to read the pages. Did you see the other drawing with a GMD/Lilo and Stitch crossover? It's cute!

I miss geocities but I'm so glad this site didn't get taken down. I love that different countries have different merchandise although I would not be able to get any if I had wanted some XD! They have a GMD/Lilo and Stitch crossover drawing? I haven't seen it yet but it sounds interesting. I'm looking at the Dancing Mouse Doll XD. A few of the images have a broken link sign on them.

I am glad, too. It's great! Oh, I found the Lilo and Stitch drawing. It was number 15, right before the one that looks like your picture:

You know I was on that page a couple times and the image just would not show up? But it does with your link! XD It is so funny! And I did notice the drawing of Basil with Doctor Doppler from Treasure Planet XD!

Brinatello In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-09-10 08:39:06 +0000 UTC]

Oh, man, nothing's changed with geocities, broken links and then fixed links. Crazy! Yes! Doctor Doppler, that's who that is! Looking back on the L&S one, I noticed Flaversham was Mr. Cobra Bubbles and laughed so hard.

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-09-10 08:52:14 +0000 UTC]

Flaversham as Mr. Cobra Bubbles was certainly not what I expected XD! I can't help wondering who is playing Pleakley behind those binoculars.

I wish Dev.art had an option to send a pic to a friend without having to put it up on the Gallery.

I think those two up in the palm tree is another Basil and Dawson spoof.

Who are you trying to send a picture to and which picture?

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-09-11 04:34:00 +0000 UTC]

XD I thought it was another Basil and Dawson up that palm tree!

I was just wanting to send you a few of my sketches since it takes me so long to put the finished colored pieces up in my Gallery XD. And I'm kind of loathed to put the sketches in my Gallery when they are photographs of the sketch.

It sucks not having a scanner, huh? I'd still like to see what you've got, though.

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-09-11 08:02:12 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I so need a scanner but photos work good enough for now. Okay I'll put 2 up at the moment but I'm going to take them down when I finish the colored versions.

Brinatello In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-09-11 08:03:29 +0000 UTC]

That's how I've been doing it, too. With my digital camera. It's the only way until I can get a decent scanner again.

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-09-11 08:21:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it is the only way. But whenever I open a photo to color or line the drawing comes out huge and I always have to make sure to scale it down some.

I put up two photos of drawings right now!

Basil's thinking ... intensely
Awesome!

And I think I know what you mean about fur color. Until I decided that enough was enough and made a color sheet to use and re-use I kept trying to "guess" the right colors. But alas - I want to go and hug all the guys at Disney for giving Basil the best colors in the studio's history! (better then the classic pink/red, blue or green ether way XD)

Shinku-Ame In reply to sycamoreleaf [2010-08-07 07:59:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Yeah, I'm tired of guessing colors so whatever doesn't look to weird--that's it! Close enough for me. Disney did do a great color pallet with the whole movie!

I was supposed to be drawing Ratigan but ended up watching the movie instead! It just pulled me in. So I thought perhaps without the audio that I'd be more focused on drawing...nope. Fail. I got taken in by the expressions, movements and etc XD!

Shinku-Ame In reply to N-i-n-e-n-d-0 [2010-08-06 00:15:19 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I know, but if you saw my drawing through he 90's nostalgia group then GMD was an option on their Other Movies category. So its their mistake not mine but they could have done it on purpose, I don't know.

That's very nice, a very solid and serious 'thinking' pose of our beloved detective. I like it quite a bit in expression, art and coloring job. Lovely all around, well done!

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-04 03:59:55 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thanks! It was my first time coloring him, and next (since it was a request) I will try my hand at Ratigan. Hopefully he'll come out half as good as Basil did...I don't know 'cuz I've never drawn Ratigan before.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Brinatello In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-08-04 08:33:02 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome! Ratigan is tough to draw so it would help to view some pictures for reference. When the time came for me to draw him, I didn't think I would succeed. He's come out all right, I suppose.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-05 02:26:38 +0000 UTC]

Ratigan does look a bit harder to draw but I'm willing to try. I thought that I should watch the movie again and pause it for reference--its just the easiest thing for me to do.

Your Ratigan does look good and I especially like your humanized Basil and Olivia!

Brinatello In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-08-05 03:26:23 +0000 UTC]

Exactly, that's the best way to do it with him. His features are so particular, so it helps to view screenshots.

Oh, thank you! I finally drew those two while looking over a favorite pose of them. I always wanted to draw that scene, but since it's a famous one, I wanted to add a twist to it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-05 07:37:04 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, that's the best way I've found since you might want to draw them when they are doing a certain something but then you can't find a screenshot of it (that's why I love the pause button).

Very welcom. I know which pose you mean and that was an interesting twist to it!

Brinatello In reply to Shinku-Ame [2010-08-05 07:58:47 +0000 UTC]

Before having the Internet in the early 90's, I used to have to pause the VHS to draw toons that way. I'd draw Darkwing Duck, Bonkers, Disney characters, all kinds. Nowadays, I sit with a paper on a clipboard and sketch from the computer screen.

Can't wait to see your Ratigan!

Shinku-Ame In reply to Brinatello [2010-08-05 08:08:24 +0000 UTC]

Ha, I did the same thing with the TV and now computer ! Although at the time my stuff did not look anything like the characters they were suppose to be.

I can't wait to see my Ratigan too XD!
