Sometimes, it’s the bleaker beginnings that lead to the happier relationships, and with Vivian the Shadow Siren, that couldn’t ring more true.
Having been created from the same energy as the Shadow Queen, it was only natural that she and her sisters were born as her top servants, her enforcers if you will. However, similar to a certain origami princess crafted aeons later, Vivian simply didn’t see the good in wreaking havoc upon the world… Because of this, her sisters more than often abused her and heckled her at every turn for the centuries to come, even keeping her in the dark about their ultimate plan to resurrect their mistress.
Like Olivia, it wasn’t until Vivian met Mario that things really began to turn around for her. Well… to be fair… It was the SECOND time that she ran into Mario that things began to turn around for her. The first time, she and his party met as enemies and fought, though even throughout the battle, Mario and co. were downright baffled at how even evil could treat their own with such cruelty. They even admitted later that fighting Vivian in particular felt so wrong… They would not meet again until the Twilight Town arc… You may remember what happened there.
Almost immediately after Doopliss had stolen Mario’s body and friends, the Shadow Sirens arrived at Twilight Town, intent on using a recently-designed explosive to terminate the plumber. However, Beldam, the eldest and most abusive sister, had lost it at some point, and predictably gaslighted poor Vivian for the misplaced item, leaving her to find the bomb before she and Marilyn woke up from a nap, or face corporal punishment.
As it was, the real Mario, in shadow form himself, found Vivian first, who was sobbing in despair that she would not be able to meet her sisters’ demands in time. Opting to help her, he found the bomb, but alas… It was broken beyond repair, as per Vivian’s assessment. But at that moment, she realised that this masked man was kind enough to help her in spite of the larger threat imposed on him. Thus, she decided to leave her sisters behind and help this fellow reclaim his identity. But when the bigger picture was revealed that this was Mario, the man who was supposed to be her enemy, that she was helping, she had to pause for a moment.
She wanted to feel betrayed upon the realisation. She felt hurt. But at the same time, she could tell that Mario genuinely treated her with true kindness and compassion, something that she had been sorely needing for so, so long now.
She decided to stay true to herself and help Mario, even after reclaiming his body and name.
It wasn’t easy transitioning into Mario’s group of pals, even though they accepted her with open arms. All of her time under Beldam’s icy iron fist turned her into a socially awkward hero. But Vivian was dependable on all fronts. She didn’t falter when faced with the reality that her former coworkers were now her enemies. She didn’t falter when she had to infiltrate the temporary home that she had lived in with her sisters. She didn’t falter when she had to face her sisters and Doopliss in battle, this time on Mario’s side (though, she did take notice and feel pity for the Duplighost, who was now on the receiving end of her sisters’ abuse). She did not even falter when she had to strike down her own queen to save the world, staying true to her claim of being with Mario all the way.
Though, I suppose that’s what made things all the sadder: when it was time for everyone to part ways and say goodbye. Sure, they kept in touch with each other, but for the first time, Vivian felt like she actually had a family. Heck, even when the queen’s influence wore off of her older sisters, she was initially new to the idea of being around them without being punished every ten minutes. But if there was anything that Mario taught her, it was that everyone also deserves a second chance if they’re willing to own up to it, and she would give that second chance to her sisters.
They thankfully didn’t disappoint.
Actively seeking out multiple sources of counselling and therapy, the Shadow Sirens went around the world to reconcile on a sisterhood that never was years ago. And the healing didn’t end there.
Vivian had also made it one of her first priorities to seek out Doopliss and check in on him, to make sure that he hadn’t been emotionally harmed too severely by Beldam back when she was evil.
Unfortunately, that was when she discovered the hard part about helping others heal; that sometimes, the wounds can run very deep. And they ran deep enough within the poor ghost to give him wave after wave of nightmares and day terrors alike. In fact, the first time she went to go see him after the adventure, she found him huddled on the ground in a panic attack crying fit, unable to stifle his terror.
She hence made it a habit to check in on him every day as long as she could to help him heal, and happily enough, the Duplighost would feel safer and safer around Vivian. They didn’t realise it then, but it laid the groundwork for a lovely bond, a relationship between two undead lovers that could depend on one another and cope with the fact that they had both been through the same test of endurance. They’d be okay…
Of course, as you might remember from the recent past, Vivian has not been around Doopliss for a while, and it is because she and her sisters have been in a rather lengthy marathon of therapeutic counselling that has stretched on for months at this point.
But just today, as we were having fun downstairs doing our own activities, the doorbell rang again! And when we answered it?
Doopliss had the happiest face that anyone could ever have. At long last… the wait was finally over.
“Oh, my DARLING!” he bawled with happy tears. “I MISSED YOU SO MUCH!”
“Oh, my Doopliss…” Vivian sweetly returned a tearful smile. “I missed you too…”
At that moment, we were all treated to the heartfelt spectacle of the two of them hugging it out, reunited at last. As they finished hugging for a moment, Vivan turned to speak to us.
“So, you’re the ones who have kept my Doopliss safe and sound… Thank you…”
We couldn’t wait to tell her about how Doopliss had been such a big hero…
