Description
Ushioni is a Japanese Yokai monster in Western Japan that appears on beach and attack human.

Ushioni is very cruel and violent. It breaths poison and likes to eat human.
According to folklores, It has bull head and oni body, or oni head and bull body, or bull head and spider body. It is also bull head with human body wearing kimono in some places, or bull head, oni body, spider arms with insect wings and flys.

In Mie Prefecture, Ushioni is believed to curse really badly and it live in a cave of Gokashoura beach. The owner of Gokashoura castle Aisu Shigeaki shot it with arrow, it cursed him and his wife became terribly ill. Since then Aisu Shigeaki kept distance to his wife and cheated. So the relationship to Aisu family and wife's family became unfriendly and finally Aisu family was destroyed by Wife's Hatakeyama family.

In Wakayama Prefecture, the bottom of Ushioni waterfall in Nishimuro area is believed to be connected to sea and when the waterfall water became unclear, Ushioni appears.
Ushioni in this area can make people ill just by seeing.
Ushioni in Ueto River licks people's shadow. When the shadow is licked by Ushioni, the person will get terrible fever and die within a few days.
A story of Ushioni in Mitsuo River is very strange that it transforms into human and help people. One day, a young man gave his lunch to a woman who was hungry. the woman was actually Ushioni and two months later it saved the man's life in the river when he was drown. However, there's a rule for Ushioni that if helped human, it has to leave the human world. So right after it saved the man, it bled everywhere and vanished.

In Sanin area, Ushioni is believed to be appearing from sea with another Yokai like Nureonna or Isoonna. When the woman yokai asks person to hold a baby, baby becomes a stone, while the person is struggling with its weight, Ushioni kills the person and eats it. Sometimes Ushioni itself transforms into a woman, but a reflection on water is still Ushioni, so it's possible to avoid being killed.

In Kouchi Prefecture in 1776 the year of bad drought, a man Jirokichi of Okauchi village witnessed Ushioni in MIneno River.

In Ehime Prefecture, there's one of the most famous Ushioni story. Ushioni in Uwajima area kept killing cows and people a lot, so one Priest in Kawabe village was asked to kill it. The priest shouted holy words, Ushioni shrank, then the priest stabbed the Ushioni's forehead with a sword and sliced it into parts. The dead body bled 7 days 7 nights and the blood became a pond.

There are some remains of Ushioni exist in each area. In Anan city, Tokushima Prefecture, there's a remain of Ushioni skull. In a temple in Kurume city, Fukuoka Prefecture, there's a remain of Ushioni's hand . Also in a temple in Goshikidai, Kagawa Prefecture, there are scroll of Ushioni and horns exist.
