Something was going on.
It was everywhere - in the forests and the rivers, in the rough soil and in the air. It had been in the whispers of the playful autumn winds, and now it was in the roar of winter's newly born storms.
Every critter running around on Windbornes mossy grounds seemed to smell it.
Danger.
Long before he heard it with his own ears from his father’s mouth, he had somehow known it.
But now, that he knew the truth, it filled him with ice cold shivers; as if the winds that already escorted winter down the mountains had somehow managed to get inside his chest, leaving a strange feeling of fear, even hopelessness inside of him.
His home was no safe place anymore.

He had heard it several times now - not spoken out loud as an open truth, rather as something poisonous that had been whispered from ear to ear in his father’s group of guardsmen.
“The worst case we could have imagined”
“An Alliance between the Point and the Cape?”
“I told you so! We allowed them to grow too strong - now it will be our death!”
“It’ll be war, I see it coming”
The young stag’s thoughts drifted to his fawnhood, to his mother, who now lived somewhere out there. For many years he had believed that she had been kidnapped, that the does at the Point were criminals; outlaws who didn’t fit into the rest of the herd, who disagreed to its laws and thus isolated themselves. Their disloyalty confused him. He knew that something had to be the reason of their isolation, but his father was too fixated on their schemes and his duty to stop them to get different information out of him.
He was a guard, he had a kingdom to serve against which they had turned; ergo, they were enemies and had to be battled. Easy as that.
Equally easy to accept for Éliot, who saw his home threatened. Reasons aside, no reasons could be severe enough to turn against your own people like this, he thought.
A coming war was matter of fact for some, others said that it was only a phase.
Fact was, the Guard lacked in numbers to stand up against any threat.

The wind blew strong on the Peak, and Eli shuddered with every step. Sharp ice crystals cut into his eyes and clamped on his hide, soon leaving it clammy and frozen to a stiff mass. It was a strange melody the wind screamed today, a furious song that hurt in his ears and wiped every thought off his mind. Blues and greys danced in front of his eyes; coldness and death filled winter’s battlefield, coldness and death had overcome the little tufts of sweet snowgrass that stuck between ice cold rocks and other frozen plants.
It looked like winter had surprised them; beneath the cover of frost, they still looked fine, only their lives were frozen in time by the harsh winds.

It was an forbidding place to roam at such a day.
And yet the wind had something powerful in it, a destructiveness that was just surpassed by its arrogance, its claim to be unstoppable, invincible, the undoubted ruler of its kingdom.
It drew Eli into its arms, seemed to search for his company. Here on the peak the buck felt a strange power pulsing inside of him - a power that was connected to the wind without doubt.
Power!
Eli’s limbs trembled, trying to warm the body with a bit of movement, but in vain. The buck’s body lacked muscles or fat that could have kept away the deathly cold. If he only was stronger!
He had lost fights this year, more than he could count. Most of them had been playful fights with his friend, but he’d lost nonetheless; a fact that had left a little crack in his self-confidence.
Not that he’d admit that to anyone.
He wanted to be strong, and big, and useful for his kingdom, especially now in times of menace. There was a duty to fulfill.

Eli turned around and let something draw him back. He walked on - he slid over rocks - he jogged - he ran - he leapt. An excitement formed in his heart and mind, and drove away all cold in his inside. Left behind was a big feeling, a giant feeling, an enormous feeling, a gigantic monstrosity of feeling!
With big leaps, he jumped down the hill, back into the forest, where his father was waiting.
“Sir!”, he gasped.
“I request to be accepted as a part of the Guard!”

Oh, Eli. What are you doing, silly boy? You'll never be a soldier, better stick to your poems and songs, kay? *pats head*

I sketched this thing SO LONG ago, and I finally found time to colour it while I was away.
Typing out the story took as long as usual, but I really wanted to write something like that.. I'm so excited for everything that happens/will happen in WB, and it's the perfect opportunity to develop this little conflict inside of him, as well as his (and his father's) loyalty, as well as his attitude towards magic.
I guess the story probably sucks, but oh well, I tried to get involved. xD
