Uh, I'm hoping there's another meaning to 'shipping' rather than simply a romantic relationship. Cause either she's way younger than she looks, or his growth is stunted. It's a cute picture, but I hardly think a foal should be shipped with an adult pony.

Ponies tend to go through odd growth spurts through and adult in which sense (biologically or culturally, since you could be consieered an adult back at 13) in the olden times.

Let me try and elaborate then: From everything we have seen in the show, ponies seem to go from being foal-sized (like Apple Bloom) to adult-sized (like Applejack) and without alot in between. We could probably assume then that ponies go through large growth spurts in a short period of time.
Second of all, with describing an adult, that is partially a cultural construct. Human beings do not actually finish maturing in their bodies until about 25. Yet we set the age of adulthood culturally to be 18 (21 for some stuff) in the US and going back centuries, were as young as 11 or 13 and considered legal adults during those bygone times (and some cultures and religions continue to have that aspect, such as the Bar/Bat Mitzvah.)
Even if we don't use EqG as a base, the context of our main cast being compared to human teenagers seems to work best, so let's say the Mane 6 and their classmates would be 15-17 for the most part.
Rumble would be probably in the 11-12 range equivalent like the Cutie Mark Crusaders. It could be possible that he could be 12 and Flitter could be 15 (well, comparison to human ages) which isn't that bad, not to mention how girls tend to mature physically sooner than boys do, which could be at work here too.
We also don't know what is the age of cultural/legal adulthood in Equestria though it is implied to be around 15 or 16 (Flutter Brutter kinda points to something like this, as Fluttershy's brother can only be a year ago younger than Fluttershy and with how he looks, the legal adult age must be around 15 for the plot (and the notion of being her younger brother) to make some sort of sense (him being 16 and her being 17 maybe)).

That all makes a lot of sense. It's very well thought out too 
Until I have concrete proof otherwise, I'm going to simply consider the pony Mane 6 all over 18 (Pinkie being the youngest, with 'Party of One' showing her 18th birthday). The Equestria Girls are still in High-School, so obviously they're still teenagers.
I also have a Headcannon that says which of the Mane 6 are virgins (1 maybe, 3 definantly, and 2 are not).

I tend to have Spike be 4 years younger than Twilight.
A prodigious school like Celestia's probably accept students around preschool time, so probably Spike was hatched when Twilight was 4

Granted, the episode with young Applejack and Big Mac coming out complciated thigns slightly with showing us 'teen' ponies, or those between the colt/fully and adukt stage, but it could still work with the idea of rapid growth spurts (though where is Apple Bloom? She msut have been born by now unless the growth spurts was that rapid and AJ was still filly-sized a while back or Apple Bloom is a baby still with her parents?)
Regardless, it is interesting to think and discuss. WOrld-building is very fun

Most likely reason for AB's absense: The writers seem to get lazier every season (complete lack of a certain reformed school bully since season 5 anyone?)

Well, this season we focused on Starlight. It's kinda figuring out what to do with all the characters.

The writers obviously had no clue how to handle reformed Starlight. She shows up for hardly any episodes, even ones where she should be present. Therefor, her triumph in the season 6 finale, doesn't feel entirely earned. Now a full season of MLP, is 26 episodes. If they had made 13 of those episodes, feature important appearances by Starlight (not simply showing up and doing nothing) the ending would have felt better. It was an okay ending (personally I hope to see Chrysalis go ape on Starlight in a future episode) but it just didn't feel like they did everything they could have done.
Theory: The writers did not want Starlight to be reformed, and that's why they basically don't seem to know what to do with her in season 6 (and why she almost seems like a sociopath at times). The Hasbro executives decided to cave on Chrysalis. Although I'm 99% certain she'll be reformed in a future season. I just hope it's not totally rushed.Β
