With characters like Baloo (Sorry, "Little John") and Kaa (Sorry, my bad, "Hiss") making there way into other shows and movies, as a kid, I saw it as the characters being actors and actresses, but just playing different roles, like how in the old Mickey Mouse cartoons in one episode he would be taking Minnie on a date in New York city, but in the next episode he would be "Jack" from "Jack and the Beanstalk".
And since I love acting, and the idea of cartoon characters being in that situation, it never bothered me.

Even in the Errol Flynn movie Maid Marian was stolen by Robin Hood.
That is not a good precedent for modern day romance; But...it is an improvement over caveman going out and bopping fair maiden on head with stick.
