Oh, I know that better and it deserve a better explanation. Spain (and Portugal) were backing reveral regimes and rebels in an Africa filled with bush wars. Portugal was an allied, democratic and *Trotskyist federation, and included both Angola and Mozambique. Both sides could deliver nukes, actually. Operasie Sitadel was a plan for a tactical use of nukes against a conventional army as a deterrent that would draw them to the negotiating table or to surrender. Spain had the capability to answer as there were ICBM-capable submarines lined up in the Namibian coast. Spain answered to part of their deployed army being wiped out with another nuke near Windhoek. South Africa answered with more nukesΒ wiping out villages and cities along the Namibian-South African border, and then Spain said enough is enough and nuked Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg and... pretty much everything there.
The USSR... it was hinted that it has *Trotskyfied to a great degree. As in, it hasn't renounced to its revolutionary symbology nor goals, they just operate in the framework of an open society and it's likely that they're a bit dilluted. It's also likelier that it works much more like an actual federation now, though the Russians are still more equal than others. There were present-day snapshots that showed Soviet magazines and websites commenting on international culture and affairs in a way that hinted freedom of information, and non-Soviet forums had Soviet citizens casually commenting stuff on them.

The data was scarce. I assumed a move towards a mixed economy with greater democratic management of the workplace, hence the *Trotskyfication.
