You've done a wonderful job of making it look as though it's been corroded with water.
Do you have any photos of this with the edges of the wood in the shot?

Well, most of the stuff that looks like water stains or splashes is. I started off with a very thin, watered down acrylic base, and had fun splashing around. After that dried I went back and did the drop shadows in oil.

Did you paint the shadows, or it the painting compiled of several levels?

The shadows are all painted. It's a completely flat surface.

It was a great choice - their inclusion Engages the viewer on multiple levels - not only through composition, but through illusion too
