Description Just finished reading Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere and I was itching to sketch the characters, especially after I took a look at the 1996 TV miniseries which was, frankly, rather disappointing. So this is more or less how I would envision them.

Such nice sketches! Seems Neil Gaiman reblogged an image of this (which linked/credited you) on tumblr~

I LOVE THISSS!!! YOU ARE AWESOMEEEEE!!! This is exactly how i imagine all of the characters looking save for The Marquis! He always pops up in my head as more similar to CeeLo Green

I love your Islington so much. Whenever I read the book now, this is how I picture all of the characters.

Glad you like him, and that it would have that kind of effect on your reading of the novel.

These are absolutely great!
I think I like Old Bailey, Richard and the Marquis best, not because you drew them better than the others but because they look exactly the way I imagined them.
Awesome job!

You are not the only one. When I saw the show I was like "awww, no no no, that isn't what I thought!" I really like your deceptions of the characters! They are really great!!

Wow, this is beautifully done! Always interesting to see how other people interpret characters. I especially like what you did with the Marquis. I had a hard time picturing him, and thought he would look sort birdlike and almost nonhuman.

That's what's so fun about books: characters are different for everyone.

wow, I find this so interesting!!! I just read this novel over the summer and fell in love with it, but I pictured the characters quite differently...it's fascinating how we read the same information but our interpretations can be so different...
Croup and Vandemar were such brilliantly psychotic characters. Because they were so twisted, I pictured them...almost less human. Croup in my mind was shorter and stouter. His eyes were almost always hidden in the shadow of his hat, but his teeth were very pointy, like an exxagerated canine mouth, and they looked quite lethal and unnatural, as though they could chomp through anything. He looked like a less cartoony form of the mayor from nightmare before christmas. Vandemar in my mind was tall and thin in a creepy way with a hooked nose and slitted eyes. Door's hair was a bit longer, very dirty and scraggly, and her face was thinner and gaunter. Surprisingly, I couldn't picture Richard properly in my mind. He was so normal compared to everyone else, so I never put much thought into it haha..
anyways, brilliant depictions!

Thanks! From the way you were going on how they appeared in your mind, I would think you ought to give it a try and draw them.

It's really cool! I love the Marquis de Carabas! I thought he was a jerk at first but he turned out to be awesome. Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemar are also really intresting characters, albeit creepy.

Aww man. Neverwhere is one of those books that I frequently picked up at the bookstore, but never ended up buying it. Is it cool? A recommendation from you would kick it up a few notches
Excellent work on the drawings, as always, the faces shows so much personality. I especially like Old Bailey.

silentsketcher In reply to cool-slayer [2009-10-03 03:57:01 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Old Bailey was my favorite to draw. Sort of had Tom Waits in mind when I sketched it.

But yes, I'd definitely recommend Neverwhere. That, along with American Gods (the sequel Anansi Boys was alright, but I wasn't impressed) and Good Omens. If you had to read any of the three, I would say pick up Good Omens. Probably my favorite of his works.

cool-slayer In reply to silentsketcher [2009-10-08 22:05:14 +0000 UTC]

I actually read Anansi Boys a while ago and didn't enjoy it as much as I expected, probably because I now realize it was a sequel and I never read American Gods lol silly me and my compulsive book-buying. I definitely made a note of your recommendations, and I'll be checking them out. Good thing Christmas is around the corner so I can expect a big batch of books coming in for me - although to be fair I still have some from last year I didn't get around to read :\ The lack of time can really be a darned thing.

silentsketcher In reply to cool-slayer [2009-10-09 01:28:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes it can. Ah, but likewise I'm looking forward to Christmas, too. There's Halloween and Thanksgiving, but who really cares about those, right? *sarcastic tone* But really, Halloween should be interesting this year. My cousin's getting married that day, so that will certainly be a different way to spend it. I just wish they'd really go all out instead of having a traditional wedding. There's so much potential when it falls on Halloween to waste it. Ugh, the shame.

cool-slayer In reply to silentsketcher [2009-10-10 11:30:37 +0000 UTC]

An Halloween wedding does have a lot of potential! But well, it will be a different way to spend the day Since we don't celebrate Halloween and Thanksgiving here, Christmas is pretty much the next big holiday. I mean, some people celebrate Halloween, but there's no real tradition, you know? It's just we see it everywhere and think "Hey that's pretty awesome", and then we want to emulate it, but it's just not the same. I don't really join in any festivities, except sitting down with ~Cosmic-Rocket-Man , friends, a bag of junk food and candy, and 2 or 3 horror movies to watch

Whoa, time out. you're telling me they made a TV miniseries on this book already? I too read it, by the way it was awesome, and I thought, 'boy this would make a great movie, or at the very least an interesting TV miniseries'. Awesome sketches by the way. I need to see this thing on Youtube, if they have it that is.

Well, like I said I wasn't that impressed with it. But I've heard talk of a possible movie, so that would be exciting. Coraline was spectacular and I can only imagine what they could do with the same animation crew, or perhaps the Henson Company, who did an amazing job with MirrorMask.
