Description Here's a length shot of this yarn tail: [link]

It's about knee-length now and much more proportionate, now that I chopped off and redid the tip of it. x_x

GAHHH this sweatshirt makes me look really porky (it's fluffy and thick) and I should have hiked up my pants better. v____V SHAMEFUL PICTURE.

I don't want to make separate deviations since the other tails weren't made by me, but my sister and friend made tails with me, too!
Here's my friend's white wolf tail (it has a grey tip and a tiny grey 'birth mark' spot on the side): [link]
And my sister's brown-gradient cat tail: [link]

All three together: [link]

And if you're curious about the movement of these tails, here's a couple videos
My tail: [link] It's attached securely and is a little lighter, making it really springy, and I've had a lot of practice walking around in it, so I can get it to swing pretty easily.
Friend's tail: [link] Pretty good!

We had trouble attaching the cat tail securely, so we didn't get any good videos of that one. The length makes it a little harder to make it swing nice, but it's long and floppy and very light.

Once again, all were made using Bir's method and if you want one, Bir and Skahlly on Furaffinity are masters and take commissions!

Thats a really nice fake tail. The movement, and it looks so soft... It gets rid of all the reasons people prefer real tails over fake. o: Was it hard to make/take a long time?

Yeah, that's what I like about it, too! Real tails do look a lot nicer, but I'm personally a little uncomfortable putting a piece of another animal's body on mine just for fun, and I like the feeling that this is mine, not someone else's.

It WAS very time-consuming. The process itself is not all that tricky once you get into it, though. A lot of it is just kind of guessing your way through, but I think the end result is so worth it.

As I've been telling others, Morgrim'sWolf on Youtube has a pretty decent tutorial. The main differences between his techniques and the ones I used are that I put mine over a key ring and I sewed on the bundles instead of tying them on. :3

But yes, the tail is very soft. The fur is quite a bit finer than real fur, so it gets kind of matted and tangled and scruffy looking pretty easily (almost like a long-haired cat), but it brushes out really easily and looks nice!

Let me know if I can answer any other questions! <33 And thanks for watchin' me!

After you make the spine, how do you go about starting the first couple tufts of fur? And how would you go about ending the whole thing to hide the top knot? Just start tying onto the keychain? I think I might make one of these if i can get the time. c:
And I'm guessing to have a bushier tail, just have a thicker spine and longer hair tufts?

xD dont mention it. I saw you on whisperpntrs journal. Caught my attention cause I agreed with you 100%, and wanted to see what kind of art you made. c: Turns out I like all of your art too! xD

The first couple tufts of fur that make the tip of the tail are tricky. I really wasn't sure how to do it, myself. I ended up redoing the end of the tail anyway, which involved cutting off the whole tip (VERY RISKY endeavor!) But it came out longer than I wanted, and cutting it off gave me the chance to do the tip better.

The first way I did it, I tied off the end of the spine braid (you can do this any way you want). Then I chopped off the ends sticking out of the knot and stitched around the tip a whole bunch to make the tip sturdy and not bulge out too much. Then I just sewed a few pieces right on the very bottom of the braid as best I could and started sewing rows of tufts above that.

It honestly didn't look that good. Somehow the very end of the tail hung just a little crooked, too.

When I cut the end off to shorten it, I tried something different, since I didn't have enough un-tufted braid to tie. So I put some rubber bands on the end of the braid to hold it tight and then looped, tied, and stitched lots of thread around the braid to hold it together. I actually left the rubber bands on, and then just sewed on the tufts of fur over them.

The very first tufts that will be the very tip of the tail are a little tricky. If you want to try brushing and ironing the end of the braided spine, that might work. I just tied off the end with rubber bands (kind of like you would use a hair tie to end a braid in your hair), and tried to sew on a few tufts at the bottom of the braid. That actually worked out fine. Really, as long as you make it sturdy, you can play around a bit to find out what works for you. I did a lot of guessing with my tail.

As for the top knot... my tail doesn't have one. The braid is only tied at one end, where the tip of the tail is. It is braided over the key ring. To do that, you want to cut every strand for your braid about 3 times longer than you want your tail to be. Once you have all the strands cut, you stick them through the key ring so it's right in the middle and just braid them together over it.

I hope that makes sense!

For a thicker tail, a thicker spine is about all you need. Mine is pretty bushy, but not SUPER fat. I think thicker fluffier tails look a little better. Mine came out about how I wanted, and I used 65 individual strands for the spine.

You might be able to cut the fur longer, too. But my friends and I used about the same length of fur and got very different fluffiness results just from the size of the spines. The placement of the fur tufts can also affect the overall appearance of the tail. Mine are close together, but not right up against each other.

I looove yarn tails and I love seeing what people come up with! :3 Take your time with the ironing so the tufts are nice and smooth. I highly recommend 100% acrylic yarn. ^u^ If you have some more questions or need clarifying on what I've already said, just ask.

Thank you! Not the most flattering picture, for sure. Maybe when it's warmer I'll get a nicer photo. xD

*grins* I'm sure by then you'll have made another tail too. Practice brings the best out of everyone, including you.

Fantastic! How are you attaching them, just a safety pin?

Silver-Sundog In reply to rydicanubis [2012-01-12 03:20:47 +0000 UTC]

I'm using twist-ties right now to hold it down firmly, so it doesn't twist around. :3 But they're kind of a pain, so I'm going to try some pins or maybe figure out something with an elastic loop... I know other people use carabiners sometimes, but I like them to be more firmly attached than that.

Oh, thanks, good catch! That is so strange. I double checked them after I posted, and they were working fine, but just now I could see that they got messed up.

Try them now?

You're very welcome, and yes yes that it does C:
Do you do commissions for such things?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Silver-Sundog In reply to BeachBumDunkin [2012-01-11 01:53:08 +0000 UTC]

I don't! This is my very first one, and it takes me too long to do, unfortunately. Even if I wanted to do commissions, I wouldn't have time! :c

But if you want to commission one, talk to Bir on Furaffinity - [link] Check out her gallery and her friend Skahlly's. They make the very best yarn tails out there, and they can do lots of colors and markings. Their tails are just plain awesome.
