Okay, so here are some elastic-headband style ears I made for Halloween 2012.

This isn't the best photo, but you get the basic idea. The thin black thing you see there is an elastic headband, and it was usually better covered by my hair.

The ears are faux fur with thick foam as internal "cartilage." (I wanted to use extra-thick felt, but couldn't find any!)

The fur is white Distinctive Fabrics fur, mostly trimmed down. I was dealing with a lack of materials! I only had long-pile white fur and do not own anything resembling an airbrush. I also don't have trimmers! So, this is carefully scissor-cut fur, all completely dry-brushed with acrylics. The tan color near the ear tips looks a bit yellow in this photo... it's more neutral in real life.

The fur was left long for inner-ear fuzz, and the back of the inner ear was darkened to add some depth.

The gold rings are not plastic! They are a bit heavy, but they are also totally removable. There are some removable feathers, too, but this photo doesn't show them. I added the feathers and rings for the Halloween costume, which was a very humonoid werewolf, featuring these ears, gold contacts, Scarecrow® fangs, scruffy werewolf fur wristbands, boots with the same fur, and this yarn tail: [link]

Despite the fangs, wolfish-gold eyes, scruffy wristbands, clearly canine tail, and classic werewolf outfit (ragged jean shorts, red plaid)... I still got called a cat at least 3 times. FUCK.

These ears were the most challenging part of the costume by far. It was difficult to get them shaped in a way that they would point UP when sitting on my head, and not OUT. I ended up having to attach a second piece of elastic, which sits between the ears and behind the main elastic. It helps the ears stay solid and stick up.

Hot glue is also an amazing thing.

I'm glad to have made these, though. These ears, along with the wristbands, tail, and fangs, make for a pretty quick "wolf" or "werewolf" sort of costume without seeming too "furry." I actually full-head masks and fursuit-like costumes, but I also don't like the negative attention I receive when wearing them! My other ears were much shittier and were attached to a dorky hat. I was able to make these ones have the markings I wanted.
