Description This is a photograph from my year 12 geology camp (We stayed at Ravensthorpe and visited Wave Rock on the last day). I think it's a really beautiful landmark - just pretend you can't see the people "surfing" on it.

I think the people give it perspective (height comparison)... Amazing natural formation!

Haha, Well... It's basically a structure carved over the years by weathering and erosion. The hues of the minerals present in the rock help give it that appearance of looking like a wave. That's all I remember anyway. I could be wrong so if you want to double-check online and correct me feel free to. ^^

How was this formed???? whats the geological history of this structure??? o.O?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Silvercresent11 In reply to Schunki [2009-05-24 08:25:09 +0000 UTC]

Oh, it was formed about 60 million years ago, I think? But a lot of the minerals within its structure date back to more ancient times or something.

It was caused by weathering and water erosion that undercut the base of the structure which left behind the rounded overhang you can see here. And the colour is caused by water from the springs disolving some of the minerals during wetter months.

At least, that's what I can remember. I might have some of the facts mixed up.

I'm glad you like it! Sometimes, depending on when you take a photo of it and from what angle - it looks a lot like a painting. ^_^ I've often mistaken photographs of this landmark for paintings on postcards...>.<
