Description So this baby is a little pet project I was working on whilst on break at work.  There's a bit of a story behind it.

Very slow day at work, so I go hunting through my car for supplies to see if there's something I can make.  I come up with yarn, and scales, and a quarter bag of old polyfill.  No jump rings or split rings, and no pliers, so I couldn't actually do scalemaille.  But, I had made a dicebag back in November where I crocheted the scales into the pattern of the yarn.  I generally have a few crochet hooks in my purse (don't ask me why, but I have embroidery scissors and a yarn needle in there too, and have for a long time), so...this happened.  And after a week or so when I got it done in bits here and there, I took it home, and helped me design a tail spade that I liked.  We cut the spade out of leather, dyed it, finished it with a satin sheen, and riveted it in as seen above.    And thus, I have a dragon tail that is super light weight, and that has all kinds of awesome movement and swinging potential!

(I actually wore it for our larp practice yesterday to see if it would drive me nuts during game, and it was perfect.  Other than the fact that every step I take the tail sometimes swats the back of my legs, and I jingle quite a bit!  But that's just an added bonus for me.    I like bells and jingly sounds.)

It's about 34 inches long from top to the tip of the spade, and it probably only weighs 1-2 pounds (I have not had the chance to weigh it).  It's only lightly stuffed with polyfill, so it has an amazing amount of flex, and just enough weight that it will swing nicely without too much effort.  Just walking will actually get it going.

It has a split loop for a belt to go through and accommodate for a dead-centre belt loop on jeans, so it won't end up cocked off to one side, it will stay centred.

There is a thin strip down the underside of the tail where the scale coverage isn't full because of the way I made it.  With the right colour of yarn, it could probably look like a bit of an underbelly.

And yes, I am aware that *gasp*, the scales do not sit 100% perfectly straight!  They move, they sometimes tilt slightly, and sometimes they shift up a tiny.  Personally, I like that aspect as it can give pretty awesome texture now and then.  But they're easy to smooth back into place, and generally running your hand down the surface will do most of the work.  The scales tend not to do that when it's being worn, only when you toss it in the car or the closet and it flops around.

ANYWAY.  Dragon tail.  <3  Yay!

Awesome !!

Thinks up-scale to 'sternites & tergites' for plausible 'Princess Pea' bug-girl for story i may yet write...

Given time, chitin-ish stuff may grow along sutures, think tortoise, but when 'PP' is promoted and her bug-butt swells unto egg-layer, such panels are stranded. And, 'QP' gotta live in a neutral buoyancy pool...

There isn't a pattern because I designed it myself. I will release a pattern in the future, but probably not until next year as my schedule is too hectic.

That is so awesome! I like the uneven scales, it makes it more realistic. My fingers hurt just thinking about mailling that together, glad you found another way!

I can't stand using split rings, so this just kinda had to happen. XD

You know those little vampire looking staple removers? They were secretly designed for opening split rings.

Sort of? I'm not making a full outfit out of scales, but I may decide to make 'hands' as well. The rest will be makeup. Its for a creature called a draconian, from a larp group I'm part of. They're basically dragon people.

I'm fairly sure what the answer is going to be, but is there any chance you would sell these on commission?

That aside, this is absolutely AWESOME!!

Yep!

I just want to make one more since this one was a 'omg wtf am I doing' test pattern.    Then I'll make them.
