Description I've screwed around in the 3D program Raydream Studio for years just for fun. Recently, I picked up it's newest version now known as Carrara. This is my first serious attempt at creating a 3D model and it's still very incomplete (I'll probably spend another month or two on it) Everything was done from scratch. The head was modeled using a vertex model (using a sphere as a base) and the textures were created by hand in photoshop with some photos of metal sheet spliced in. I plan to make it a fully complete character model, but seeing as it took me a week just for the face, it may take a bit

This is one hell of a master peace! Fantastic! I think you should forget to model the head, because it is allready perfect, you said you want to change something, but it allready makes people to say wow. I believe it is perfect to be a movie character, make a body and rock n roll

At first i thought it was a photgraphy, the quality of the textures are amazing, the face reminds me of the blade weilding baddie in Hellboy, the lighting is fantastic, the whole thing is mindblowingly great +fav me thinks

Man this is slick, I would love to see something like that as a 10 foot movie poster, so striking.

It astonished me that this is incomplete, I love it.
It means we'll all be waiting for a 3D SHREDD though.

James, have I ever told you how sick your skills are?
You just seem to pick up any medium or technique and kill it.
so on one hand I'm glad I never fought you.. but on the other it would have been cool to see your side of it

Mmmmmmmmmm! Delicious. I love the texturing.. this is why digital painters like us make good 3D modelers XD
Do you plan to add bone systems to it and morph targets so it can animate? I've never heard of Raydream Studio, btw.

silverlimit In reply to Hock [2006-07-20 04:19:04 +0000 UTC]

Hell yeah. I know about the basics of bones and Carrara has the feature. I'd like to migrate to Maya in the future though as I hear it's a little better at it. About Raydream, it got discontinued and merged with Bryce 3D into Carrara. It's made by Eovia now, makers of Amapi if you've ever heard of that program. Pretty powerful though it lacks some of the more advanced vertex modeler tools and can't do subsurface scattering on shaders.

Maya, eh? I'm getting into that one. Up until now I've only used 3D Studio Max. I look forward to more three deez from you (I have more of my own coming soon)

MaJoRoesch [2006-07-19 06:02:17 +0000 UTC]

NO FAIR. I work my rear off for 2 years and I doubt I could make that with Max. Maybe I'm using the wrong program or something...

Could you give me some info on that program?

silverlimit In reply to MaJoRoesch [2006-07-20 04:13:42 +0000 UTC]

It's not so much the modeling as the texturing that makes stuff stand out sometimes. The head was pretty plain looking, but with a photoshop painted texture and bump map applied to different shader domains it really makes stuff pop. Lynda.com is an awesome resource to learn how. They have video tutorials for how to do just about anything in any program if you can fork out the cash: [link]

Money is one of the things I don't have lol. *sigh* And I know all about the texturing, HDRI shaders, all sorts of stuff. I guess I just need to put more time into 3D...

looking good so far. somehow it feels more like a digital painting rather than a 3d model.

For a first attempt, this is a very good piece. The metallic sheen looks very good and that face looks incredibly eerie, particularly its eyes. The sides of the cheek look a bit blurry but considering this is unfinished, this is understandable.

Nevertheless, nice work; at this rate, I would look forward to seeing you do some 3-D Shredd model in the future...
