I have been in love with this Zebra from the moment I saw him, the very first time being when he was bred with another pone I love, Acid Rain. If I were to have my way back then the pair would be special someponies, but alas, t'was not meant to be, and he soulmate have been found in another amazing pony~ Opiate is so unique in both design and story I love him to pieces and am complete honored to own him. He's going in my main 6 for sure.

Personality: Opiate prefers to keep to himself mostly, aside from visiting a few friends and going into Ponyville to get supplies he is usually found in his home making potions. He comes off as rude or grumpy to most as he usually keeps either a somber expression on his face, or if he's wearing his mask, tends to mumble his words making others thing he doesn't really care to speak to him. The mask thing isn't completely his fault however, sure he isn't always into conversation but it also isn't very easy to talk with such an apparatus on your face. He is rather smart when it comes to potions and the like, he's studied much in his lifetime and has learned many things. He isn't always so gracious about it however, he is considered arrogant by some due to a bit of an egotistical streak in him. He is very cocky and HATES being wrong, stubbornly accepting any challenge given to him and arguing the facts until his logic is exhausted. That doesn't mean he doesn't have friends, he is very close to one the ones he has, they often come to him for advice as he is considered rather wise by them. Some consider him a real stud, gaining the attention of mares and stallions alike due to being rather handsome, and though he brushes off most romantic advances he isn't above gettin' busy with other ponies when he needs to let off some steam.

Opiate is not without fear, due to the events that lead to his disfigurement, he has post traumatic stress disorder. Most nights he awakes in a cold sweat, the nightmare of loosing his wife playing over and over in his mind. He has frequent anxiety attacks as well, especially when he is around a pony performing magic, that is part of the reason why he wears his gas mask so often around others even though he doesn't like it too much, it hides his expressions. His anxiety attacks can at times be rather violent, was feel like a deep pain in his chest triggering the horrible memories, causing him to thrash around in anger. He does his best to keep this away from his close friends but a few of them have witnessed his daylight terrors. He feels he may never be at peace but does his best to cope. He has a deep resentment for magic of any kind.

Opiate grew up under his former name, Jericho, and for the most part his life was great. His younger years were spent with his parents and younger sister, he was an over achiever in school and dreamed of becoming something great. He had a big interest for Alchemy and potions, loving to mix ingredients to see what sort of effects they may have on one another. He earned top marks in potions class, and was often the center of many arguments of who would be partnered with him for projects. He always choose the same mare when he could though, a cute little filly named Scarlet who wasn't too good with the subject, she preferred the Spellcasting class, loving to perform and combine spells. She needed a partner who could help her get good marks and he wanted at least some interaction with a filly, seeing as he was a bit of a nerd he wasn't too desirable in the dating scene. Though they were different they found that they worked well together, eventually mixing the fillies magic ability with Opiate's potion making prowess. Their chemistry was so great both metaphorically and physically that they eventually started dating, then married and had a child.

Opiate grew up rather handsome and wanted to shed his old nerdy persona, renaming himself Opiate to reflect his special talents, a trend amongst most Equestrian residence. His old name was given to their child, Jericho Jr. Opiate and his wife continued their work together as well as their own personal projects, Opiates being an invisibility serum and Scarlet's was an experiment to combine two specific fire spells together, something that had not been done before. They were happy with their lives and so was their son, until the unthinkable happened.

Scarlet believed it was done, the spell was complete and every bug was kinked out, or so she thought. It was time to perform the spell, Opiate and Jericho sat intently watching her prepare for the spell. "Ready?" she asked excitedly, and her two men shook their heads excitedly. Her horn began to glow as the spell was started, fire appeared and began to swirl and spin beautifully around the room, it was a magnificent show. All of a sudden, everything seemed to stop, as though time itself was put on pause. All of the fire quickly accumulated inside Scarlet's horn as though it were trying to find a home, but she couldn't handle its power. Like an atomic bomb, she exploded into a fiery inferno, Opiate and his son being caught up in the blast. But the fire wasn't done with them yet, its host unable to hold itself power it sought out a new one, drilling itself into Opiate's chest. He began to deteriorate as fire spewed from his mouth and eyes, his flesh burned around the entry point all the way up to his mouth revealing the muscle and bone beneath . This all happened within the span of very few seconds, and ended as soon as it began, the fire had found a host strong enough to contain it. A hurting Opiate tried to get up, blood pouring from his wounds, "Scarlet..." he whispered, the fire having harmed his vocal cords. From painful eyes he looked where she had been standing, but all he could see was a shadow where she had once been standing, she had been obliterated completely. Before he could turn to check on his son, he blacked out.

He awoke in the hospital a month later, after recovering in a coma. Not only were there many scars from surgery and healing, but his lungs were completely messed up. It looked as though he would have to be hooked up to a big clunky breathing machine for the rest of his life, that is until a scientist friend paid him a visit. While there he fitted Opiate with his own personal gas mask that would bring air to his lungs, bypassing the air duct completely without the help of a huge machine. He didn't want to wear the thing for the rest of his life though, he thought it looked kind of gaudy. And so his friend also gave him a respirator plug, and though it didn't work as well as the gas mask it will still allow Opiate to be free of the mask for short periods of time.

Reality began to hit him as he readied to leave the hospital. His belief that his wife had been obliterated had been proven by the forensics team, and his son was absolutely no where to be found. He couldn't have turned to ash like his mother, there was no evidence in the how to show it, but he couldn't be found regardless. Opiate was alone. And so in his weakened and saddened state, he bought a new home far away from his old one, far away from where most ponies lived and secluded himself there to continue his potion work after all his records were lost. He may have had everything taken away from him, but at least he still had that much.

It took a very very long time for him to begin to warm up to anypony again, it started with a random visit from a strange looking mare. Dusk Symphony, a Longma had been exploring the forest one day, she did so often because it was a place she once use to live and play. "Hellu~" she said as she entered his home, uninvited. "Excuse me? Who are you?" Opiate stammered, nearly dropping a vial. "Oh, I'm Dusk. I'm sorry for bothering you... I just wanted to see who lived here was all. I'll leave... but first oh my gosh is that a gas mask?" she said running up to him. He flinched in horror as she came really close, this was the first time in awhile he was around another pony, "I love these, they're really cool! I kind of... have a thing for them." she giggled. "That's... wonderful?" he said, a small smile flinching on his face. He didn't think anyone really liked those things. She was rather forward but for some reason he liked that about her. "Well I'll go now, again sorry for bothering you bud!" she said as she started for the door. "You don't have to go, I'd... really like the company." he said softly. Dusk happily agreed, and sat quietly as she watched him do his potion thing. "This is mesmerizing." she said. She was there for hours until nightfall, and then when leaving told him that she'd visit again sometime, he didn't talk much but he seemed alright in her books.

And she did visit again, many more times after that in fact. But, during one of those times a big mistake was made. "So, you watch me all day, what is it that you do?" Opiate asked her as she watched him for the millionth time. "Oh, I can show you!" she exclaimed happily, charging up her horns and expelling small musical diamonds from them. Opiate gasped in horror, and in an uncontrollable fit he began to buck violently. "MAGIC!" he snarled. Dusk jumped back, frightened as her magic dispelled. As Opiate began to calm, he gritted his teeth together. "I'm... so sorry you had to see that." he said. Dusk looked at him with concern in her eyes, as he began to tell her his story. This was the most he had ever really spoke to her at once. "Opiate..." she said softly. "That's horrible... I'm... sorry..." she said softly, vowing internally to never use magic around him again, she didn't want to trigger another horrific accident such as that. He held no resentment to her for using it either, as she didn't know it was a big no-no for him and continued to allow her to visit. He really enjoys her company and sometimes... well they end up making some chemistry of their own.

She isn't the only one however, there is a strange pony Opiate has found in his travels. One day while looking for an elusive ingredient for a potion, Opiate found himself in a deep dark cave, it was almost too dark to see. Then a light in the distance, a red glowing light. He followed it until he reached a strange red looking creature, it was curled up on the ground shivering and whimpering. Opiate isn't really one for fuzzy little creatures but he felt bad for the creature none the less. "Did you get separated from your mother or something little puffball?" he said, picking up the creature in his hoof. The little creature continued to shiver. "Well maybe if you were, we'll find her deeper in the cave." he said, taking it with him. "Wouldn't want you to get eaten or something." He continued farther until he saw another red light. "Maybe that's the mother?" he said to himself, as the light got closer and closer until he could make out what it was. It was a strange looking stallion with glowing markings, gems on his flank, and a long tail with a plant wrapped around it and a cage at the end. "You found him! Oh thank goodness I was rather worried." he said, taking the now happy little creature from Opiate's hooves. "What brings you to Glowsprite Caves, young traveler?" the stallion asked. Opiate explained that he was looking for rare ingredients for spells. "Well you came to the right place, Opiate was it? I can show you all kinds of rare minerals." he said with a smile. "The name is Alucard by the way, nice to make your acquaintance. Along the way the talked and talked, they found they had a lot in common, both were rather knowledgeable and both dabbled in alchemy from time to time. As time went on they got closer romantically, and began calling each other special somepony. Dusk was jealous about this at first, she cared deeply for Opiate but she warmed up to the idea when Opiate said they would still be able to do all the things they normally do, and once she met Alucard she learned he was really nice. The trio make up a great friendship that can never be broken.
