Description 7/29 - FINALLY found the print and amped up the scanner. Much happier with this scan. [It's still not print sharp though] Now, If you look hard enough you can see the buildings across the bay and the airplane.

Try the new & improved pimped out Full view hehe

A shot from a long time ago [my first hobby role I think]. I really didn't like it much until recently.

The colors captured are good here and the two really strong verticle lines give it some energy and a nice boundry. I think that the powerlines and the un predictable angle of the trees threw me for a second, but there are enough lines of direction in this to keep it unified. The two rigidly verticle trees are eched enough with the lampposts and the powerlines do lend their own diagonals to the frame. In the end, I think it workd just enough to keep a person looking at it. Kudos! Very nice.

After looking through your gallery, I'm finding it really hard to come up with something more constructive than "beautiful, I love it!". But I'm going to try. I see the airplane! ok, I'm being serious now... As someone who spends alot more time outside in nature taking pictures than in a city taking them, I think this piece captures something very interesting as a sort of median between the two. The sunset, trees, streetlights and foreground powerpoles (or are they trees too?) appear at first glance to construct the typical sun-setting-on-a-lovely-nature-scene shot. It isn't until you notice that there are lights on those treetrunks instead of branches and there are buildings and a plane in the background that you realize it is a city. Or maybe I've just spent too much time in the bush and I'm starting to see things funny...either way, I think this is a really interesting shot. Sorry, that was pretty long-winded

I am loving the colors and the contrasts in this one. Those lights against the sky look simply amazing and the color tones in the sky are gorgeous. Very nice shot. The sillhouetes look great as well

Urban Sunset:

This piece leaves me in tension...the scan obviously did no justice to the original print, which I want to see.

Sunsets make the most beautiful images. No matter how many times I see one they still leave a good impresion. Once again, it look slik you have taken a common subject and turned it into gold.

It's hard to believe that this was taken so long ago, because it demonstrates great knowledge for photographic format. But, let me touch on the technicals first:

I read the comments, and you say that this is a scan of a 4x3 with no negatives. I think what you could do, rather than blow up the original, is take that 4x3 and scan it again at a higher quality. You don't have to scan at 1:1...you can amp up the qaulity on most scanners to get a much more detailed image. Frankly, this full-view is almost like judging from the preview. It is hard because of its size, and it looke like there is some compression involved too.

About the composition, those two trees are fabulous. Just a sunset would be enough, to bring out those beautiful colors, point out those cool clouds, but this is really taking it above and beyond what is expected for a sunset photograph. It gives a sense of silhouette, and distance. It registers where the photographer is standing.

I would have placed them a bit farther to the left, however. They frame the sunset on the left side, but they also block it at the same time. If you stepped back and to the right, then you would have the two trunks on the left and the branches on the right, a perfect frame, without interrupting the view itself.

I would also have taken the photo up a bit more, to show more sky. there is a bit more dead space at the bottom than you need.

A great touch are the lampposts. Somehow, while it is still light out, they seem alien.

A well framed sunset
Alas, a scan too tiny
Great early photo

Again thank you for such wonderful advice. I really had no option to get closer though. I was standing on a rather tall jungle gym platform because there was a horrible construction site on ground level. The botom has too much dead space because the scanner distored it.

I certainly will dig for the negs. Hopefully I can re-calibrate my scanner and see if I can do as you suggested. {or maybe buy a better scanner }

yeah, it's a bit small and grainy, but I like the colours and the silhouettes, they work pretty fine. too bad it's not bigger.

Ya but it's a scan of a 4X3. And I have misplaced the negs so boo hoo.
