Description This is Hamadryas amphinome, commonly called the Red Cracker because of the red on its ventral side and because it makes a cracking sound when it flies. I’ve wanted to see one of these beauties for a long time, and I finally got a good view of this one at the Missouri Botanical Gardens Butterfly House in St. Louis. A real treat for me!

that is some wild colored butterfly, that would be a challenge to paint on a ceramic butterfly piece. never seen one like it. Beautiful work

Thanks; glad you like it! Yes, it is a very intricate pattern, probably makes good camouflage on the right background. It is a beauty!

Sorry for the late reply.

We do now! After taking this photo, I saw several of these at the Indy Zoo's butterfly house. After not seeing any for so long, I suddenly saw a lot of them. THis is still probably my best photo, though. A real lovely butterfly!

Glad you like the picture; thanks. Yes, they make sound! Interesting thing is, from what I've read, no one knows yet what part of the butterfly's body makes the sound, nor how the sound would be detected by butterflies, which have no ears or auditory organs we can recognize. One thing's for sure: the butterflies understand all this!

Nice shot! And lucky you for seeing one of these.
As always, blue w/ black is a color combination that can't go worng.

Thanks! Kind of funny, but I've wanted to see one for a long time, then on after seeing the one I posted here, I went to the local butterfly exhibit in my home town, and there were several of them. When it rains, it pours! I got some good views of the ventral side, too, which shows why it's called a "red cracker". I haven't gone through them all yet, but if there is a good one, I'll post it. Thanks again for your kind words.

Yea, I would love to hear it. I didn't actually see this guy fly so no sound. I think the sound is made mainly in defending territory. From what I've read, it is unclear how the butterfly makes the cracking sound or, for that matter, how other butterflies detect the sound, as they don't have ears. Makes this a pretty interesting little beauty!

Nice shot! The pattern on the butterfly reminds me of a Cymatics pattern.
