Whether or not you explicitly made a statement, this photo does in and of itself- which is why you are getting a lot of opinions.
In psychology, Maslow's Pyramid to Self Actualization lists Physiology as the base. Before all else, you need to eat and drink and also have shelter. The next is Safety. After you have the basic necessities of survival, you need to feel Safe and Stable. You need not worry about your next meal. Only then Love, the third and middle of the pyramid is reached. Now that you have taken care of yourself, you have the room, time, and sensibility to care about and for others; You can willingly accept relationships with other people for no defined purpose.
Some disagree with the order of this proposed set-up, but I support it.

and that's fine, I just don't want people to confound their opinion with a simple political or social statement that I haven't made. I don't think that the photography itself makes a clear 'statement'. I think it asks a question.

Thank you for both of your crotchety answers to a pretty basic question. I'm a neutral viewer who was just curious, plain and simple. I wasn't trying to offend you... But now that I've asked, I think its safe to say that I take pity on you for your rather miserable personality.

This is true in some cases but a lot of homeless people are mentally ill and have lost their grasp of reality. I live in NYC and it makes me so sad when I see people starving and wasted on the side of the street. I donate food to the local food bank and homeless shelter. Its not much but I think it helps. Sometimes addiction gets the best of people even if they are loved bc the pain is stronger than anything else...

true? what is true in some cases? I can only repeat that I was not trying to make a distinct point and I think the things in the picture do not make a clear and linear statement (such as speaking of a "truth") either.

everybody can see different things in it, that is inevitable even. that fact there is this semantic tension is why I took the photo, obviously. but to think that the words that can be read in the picture were my words, as if I put them there to make a political statement, that's just a little absurd, isn't it?

True enough..
If we all gave and received enough love, then we would take better care of each other, and be sure that while we were in our houses sleeping or eating dinner, there wouldn't be someone sleeping in the trash next to the house or starving 40 feet down the sidewalk.
But as it is, fear gets in the way too often.

Well said,I think some peoples' misunderstanding of the concept 'all you need is love' is they immediately think it means all you need is to receive love and everything will be ok,when as you say it concerns having love in your heart to give and receive and not discriminate,if everyone lived by this this type of scene would cease to exist

"All you need is love"?
mmm I don't think so
you can't feed yourself with love, you need food!
if I'd be somewhere around I would have gone to shop and bought bread, cheese and milk. and give it all to this person!

1. He's starving for love.
2. All you need is love, DISPROVEN.

I'm not trolling, I just try to make people understand that I did not 'invent' this, I did not put these signs there to "make a point". for instance, when you see a photo of a person expressing his hatred or love for something through symbols, does that mean the photographer hates or loves this thing as well?
as some people noticed there is no one-way message in this shot, things can be seen in different ways, and the symbols here speak to us on a cultural level that invokes more complex things than just "look at this poor man he's so poor". everybody knows that poor people are poor. also, I don't pretend to know the person in the picture, so how could I dare to make a statement on how good or bad he feels?
it's the words in this picture (which are, again, not my words, I just react to them and 'use' them), and the positioning of elements that obviously create a certain tension, the one-dimensional statements that some people see in it are put together by/within themselves and their cultural relation to the 'subject', mostly.
I think I prefer trying to find good questions instead of rushing to answers without asking one first.

....and nobody notices the food in his cap?
That's love, my friends.
I'll be honest; when I see people like this in the street or elsewhere, I stop. I check on them and chat with them and if they want help, I give it. Most of them just want money, not especially for food. Some of them want help, don't want to be on the streets, don't have family or have family who won't help, and in those cases I do everything in my power to help them, hook them up with a place to stay, whether at my place or elsewhere, and help them find jobs/get treatment/whatever they need to get back on their feet. There's places and associations and volunteers and programs all focused solely around helping people like this; although sometimes these people aren't aware of them, or don't know how to get help. If for some reason they aren't able to get help from programs or churches or other things, then I'll do it myself.
But people who want help are in the minority. The majority of people on the street are there because they want to be, prefer that life. They have family who cares about them or homes to go back to that they've left, on purpose, because they prefer the freedom and autonomy of this life.
It seems impossible to comprehend to most people, who are used to and dependent on conveniences, appliances, electricity and television; but there's a lot of freedom in living on the street, or on your own. People say 'Nobody wants to live that life, but some people DO. It's freedom from pressure from work, from family responsibilities, from having to pay bills and report to bosses and worry about cars and what's going to be on TV the next day. It's sleeping when you want, going where you want, never having to be anywhere you don't want to be. Some people find occasional hunger or inclement weather a perfectly acceptable trade-off to this. As far as they're concerned, they've got everything they need.
And people can be surprisingly generous. I've had not a few persons brag to me, 'Man, I can just sit here for an hour or two and get $20, easy. That's all it takes." Which might not seem like much, but when you don't have to pay rent or gas or bills or buy clothes, and your only expenses are food (or alchohol), then it can go a long way.
Which isn't to say everyone wants to be on the streets. Obviously. And for some reason I haven't been able to fathom, people who don't want to be there have a harder time getting money/help from passersby. Maybe because they're ashamed, or embarrassed, or just too desperate, and that drives people off. I don't know. But I always, always check. Because those who NEED help should get it. It's not that hard.
All you need IS love. But TRUE love shows itself in action. If YOU want to help, there's a place in every city, every state, where you can find a way to help. Check [link] to find the closest shelter/program to you, or search online, ask around. It's not easy, but it's not hard, either. All you have to do is make a decision to help, and follow through with it. That's love.
