Was looking back through early concepts for Jack and Madelene that i had settled on way before i started Crankrats. As i've mentioned before, the story was completely different back then. I decided to redraw the pair as they would have been, meeting their current incarnations!

Apart from Joey going from goggle-dog to Mecha-cat, i'd say Jack had the biggest transition out of the three. In the first draft of the story, he was a Bantarian like Madelene. He worked as a engineer for the rebel cause, creating generators that could be detatched from his chest. This gave everyone in the story the same ability as his current form does, which really shot the narrative to pieces. He wasn't as important, and all in all he was really just a pretty face for Madelene's affections. His attitude had completely shifted as well. He was quiet and serious, which made his interactions with Madelene almost painful to write. He was screaming for a re-design from day one, and now three years down the line along with a nice race-change, a unique power and a good injection of assholery, he's a much better character for it.

Madelene's changes have mainly been aesthetic in nature. She was a firecracker from the start and continues to be so to this day, but her original design was a little too fancy to really be her. I took away some of her more delicate features, and gave her a much plainer face, hopefully without losing her girly-ness. She needed a slightly sturdier design seeing as she was going head to head with Jack for most of the comic, so she should look as tough as she feels.
