STORY

The cold wind reminded me of the task ahead - to bring both Silva and me down this hill safely. Having lived in Germany for most of my childhood, I have been to the Alps before but never on horseback and especially not down a skiing slope. "Stay calm, you practiced for this. You got this", I told myself and gave Silva a good scratch down her neck. She didn't seem to be bothered by the unusual location at all. My wonderful companion has been bred in captivity and had never been to the Alps before but there must be something in her genes that automatically make her appreciate and enjoy the more or less tamed nature in the mountains. I made a mental note to ask some of the other Obertaurer owners about their experiences after the ride. The chime of a bell broke my train of thought and immediately pulled me back into the spheres of reality. I sat up straight, picked up the reins and put my right leg back to signal Silva to start in canter. We had practiced riding on snow and jumping downhill but it was still a scary undertaking. Silva did as she was told and quickly picked up a good speed, maybe a bit too fast for my liking. But I decided to ignore the primeval fear of what could go wrong and just trusted my horse. Not once had Silva done something that would endanger both of us, she was an incredibly sweet and careful horse. At five years of age she was fairly young, especially for such a jumping course, but the event hosts allow horses of this age to enter so I gave it a go. In the months leading up to the event, we practiced jumping, she had not been introduced to jumps before, and riding on unstable and potentially slippery ground. All the little practice rounds in Wales and Obertauern had gone well so I signed up for the competition. The good thing about this kind of jumping course is that you don't have to remember which jump comes next, you just go in a straight line and try to ride well. The first few jumps were done, Silva did incredibly well at keeping her feet steady on the snow. I praised her with my voice and by gently rubbing her neck. This apparently made her very happy, she took a big stride and overjumped the next jump! We landed safely still and I just laughed and told her that she is the best horse I've ever met.
