Description

DISCLAIMER: Kids, do not jump off 100-foot waterfalls! Surface tension is NOT a lie your parents told you!

Just a couple of things to note this time. Firstly, I didn't put that cheese on the Altar of Gouda. I found it, arranged in the exact way you see in the comic. Easter Egg of some kind, or just the mod author being weird? You decide!

Also, yes! I made a dig at the Stormcloaks! But in all honesty, I see a legitimate connection. Falskaar seems to be the logical extreme of the Stormcloaks' ideals: an independent, Nord-dominated society that's focused heavily on tradition. They still claim to be tolerant of other races, and indeed there are one or two elves frolicking about, but do you know where I see the most diversity in Falskaar? Yngvarr's army. And as I need not remind you, Yngvarr is the bad guy. Part of that is just the mod design (Yngvarr's guards are essentially bandits, which are much more diverse than guards in Falskaar or Skyrim) but examined from a strictly narrative viewpoint, it raises some eyebrows.

In the Falskaar main quest, Goran does sacrifice himself in the manner depicted in the comic (without the Monty Python reference, for which you may fully blame me). Jarl Valfred (SPOILER ALERT) also does not survive. And yet... Shelob and company have rescued him! Will this have a big impact on the plot? Survey says:

I didn't. It just looks that way through the power of webcomic magic.

oh okay... you can actually get him as a companion if you have the mod "become high king of skyrim"

Surface Tension? Whats that!? The laws of physics and logic does not apply to Skyrim!

Unbeknownst to others, Ebon studied physics of Skyrim before becoming the Ebony Warrior. He has a PhD to prove it! Though he doesn't use it much in his current line of work...

Hyaskus In reply to HelloMyNameIsEd [2014-03-01 20:11:06 +0000 UTC]

Yes. Too bad he did not study under the Synod or he would know there is no such thing. But alas he decided to go to the College that is surrounded by xenophobic Hicks. Rather than Xenophobic Gestappo Like Elves

HelloMyNameIsEd In reply to Hyaskus [2014-03-01 23:10:23 +0000 UTC]

So if the Elves have the Gestapo, then I want to know who's got their own FBI or NKVD. Then we can incite the Cold War tensions all over again in Tamriel!

To this day, there are still some who know him only as "Dr. Warrior," a name which was believed by the people of Skyrim to be worthy of "all the grant money."

Okay, so I don't play Skyrim on the PC and thus have very little idea as to how screenshotting works, but I'm going to congratulate you on that dodged-arrow shot anyway. Man! Incredible! You do a really good job with each panel, but that one especially was impressive.

or maybe that's really easy to do. I dunno; PS3 is an entirely different monster. Anyway, nice job.

Sir-Douglas-of-Fir In reply to InagiMiho [2014-02-27 20:16:26 +0000 UTC]

Wow, thanks! Admittedly, console commands on the PC made that shot a lot easier, but I appreciate the compliment just the same.

Janus3003 [2014-02-27 16:21:59 +0000 UTC]

Nice GIMPing with the arrow dodge (unless you were just insanely lucky, then ignore any undeserved congratulations). And now "Surface Tension" has me thinking of the original Half-Life...

Heh, I think the game I Wanna Be the Guy has you survive a thousand-foot (probably much more) drop into a pool of water that only goes up to your waist. You even catch fire on the way down.

Sir-Douglas-of-Fir In reply to Janus3003 [2014-02-27 17:31:49 +0000 UTC]

No GIMPing. Just shot an arrow past him with the game's speed set to 10%, so I had plenty of time to take that shot. I think I probably did get lucky with that streaking effect, though it did happen twice.

The only logical direction for games to go now is to have a character fall 50,000 feet onto a damp sponge.

Sounds like an amazingly creative way to murder somebody. It's just what Bethesda would have the character do!

the-exiled-muse [2014-02-27 15:52:08 +0000 UTC]

I like how Shelob and company attempted to kill the orc bandit stealing the key. When I first saw him do that, I wanted to do the same thing.

Consider Jarl Valfred's reaction at the waterfall, I'm guessing he knows enough about Shouts to have recognized the Unrelenting Force?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sir-Douglas-of-Fir In reply to the-exiled-muse [2014-02-27 16:15:45 +0000 UTC]

I was actually really surprised to discover there wasn't an invisible barrier blocking that arrow. I'm tempted to try playing through that scene again and seeing if I can attack him.

I don't think he knows much, if anything, about the Thu'um, but after seeing Shelob freeze a group of bandits in the last strip, Valfred knows something unpleasant is bound to happen when one of these strangers starts speaking in an unfamiliar tongue.

the-exiled-muse In reply to Sir-Douglas-of-Fir [2014-02-27 16:52:01 +0000 UTC]

Perhaps, although the Thu'um is legendary. It's possible the Jarl knew the stories at least, such as those surrounding the Graybeards, Olaf One-Eyed, Talos of Atmora, and of course Ulfric and Markarth Incident.

Funny, it sure felt like Surface Tension when I jumped off that diving board last summer.

A great chapter as always. Now I have to ask. Do you add the word bubbles in gimp? or do you use paint before you edit them together? I ask because I can't get my work bubbles to do that.

I think that cheese altar was used to worship Sheogorath. Cheeeeeeeeeese!
I like that you saved Valfred. But by doing this, you removed the most famous line from the trailer. Jump!   I've never understood why he told me to jump to survive but he didn't. There weren't any advantages of him staying up there.

Sir-Douglas-of-Fir In reply to SereglothIV [2014-02-27 14:46:27 +0000 UTC]

Oh wow, thanks for that quote. Now I feel validated in my opinion.

Maybe unnecessary self-sacrifice is contagious, and your character has to jump before he/she catches the urge to set himself on fire or something.

Surface tension? By the Nine! If you hadn't mentioned it, the plot would have continued without a hitch! Now you've mentioned the glaringly obvious fault in the game's programs and we're all going to *splat*
