Description Drawn/painted in PS

The Cartographers Guild just had its tenth anniversary and we decided to do a big map project to commemorate the event.
Robbie [the admin] and I drew up a large world map and we set about handing out countries to all the Guild members who wanted to join in.
We had 50+ people working on countries and Guildworld really started to shine. Of course, I had a country to map too.

My country ended up being Nahadua and I chose a somewhat complex style to map it in. It took a few weeks to get to this point.
You can see all the progress in the wip thread is over on the Guild site - www.cartographersguild.com/sho…
There's still a color version in the works and probably a few more maps related to Nahadua - a region or two and maybe some cities.
There's also some entertaining back story there too.
Oh, I forgot to say - this can be seen larger here - www.cartographersguild.com/sho…

Other bits...

This is one of the most amazing maps I've seen anyone create, thank you for sharing it.

Beautiful map! The mountains looks 3D, coming out from the map.

A huge map where others can "adopt" a country? I did the same but still a wip...

An amazing job on the mountains, do you use a special brush for them?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SirInkman In reply to Kaloith [2016-05-28 16:20:17 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Marty
No special brushes.
I use basic brushes for most all of my work.
The mountains were done in several layers with a soft round brush.
It's mostly a technique I came up with. it takes a good bit of time to produce.

This map is awesome but the whole project is even more awesome. I just checked out some of the maps on the guild site and the world map. It looks like so much fun. The best part is how it's not done in ONE standard style and theme, but everybody does his map how he wants to do it. And this makes it very personal.

Thanks Carbonian
Are you a member of the Guild?
If so, I can set you up with a country - we have a few still that haven't been mapped.
I wanted everyone to feel free to put their own influence and style into the project.

Unfortunately not. I'm very interested in cartography, but right now I have so many projects that I can't spend as much time on it as much as I want. So I just rarely look up the site when something interesting catches my eyes or I need a tutorial for my maps. But I can't become part of the community as I don't have the time to be active there. And I don't want to be another innactive account ^^". Even this deviantart account is pretty much inactive. I only use this to follow my favorites and comment on their submissions

Oh my, this is splendid! I thought that was the southern part of Pakistan, but when I clicked the thumbnail, it was another world!

May I ask how did you come up with the names of the places in your map? Did you have a method to do that or was that just random? I can see some Italian or Latin there

SirInkman In reply to NagayoshiRyuu [2016-05-27 15:51:51 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Ryuu
I sort of have a method, but not a standardized one.
I actually say the words/sounds and through that process sound out words that have a similarity.
Sometimes I put more thought and process into my naming conventions, but this was a less specific setting and I didn't have as much time to do all that here.

It all started with the name Nahadua, which sounded sort of african. So I went from there.
Some of it started to sound more Indian, but there wasn't a specific intent.

You're welcome SirInkman !

So the names were born creatively, weren't they? I find it interesting since I also spent some time before making some sketches of maps and names of places for my story's setting. However, I lost my free time which were shifted to studies. That's why I'm very glad to see such maps being made with artistic touches. Kudos!

Well, I may have more to show of Nahadua. Might do some work this weekend if there's time.

SirInkman In reply to zalezsky [2016-05-27 15:48:12 +0000 UTC]

What sort of competitions?
I try to enter ones that seem relevant to my skillset.
If you know of some, let me know.

zalezsky In reply to SirInkman [2016-05-28 17:50:59 +0000 UTC]

There are some big fancy ones out there run by universities, but I shy away from those since I only really use one program and do everything by hand whereas they have access to technology that costs thousands of dollars per year to own, like GIS style ones. There are some local competitions that I've participated before for example Krall's Map of the Fortnight Contest. I usually enter it when I know there will be other high quality cartographers joining; that way it makes me want to work twice as hard on my map  Link to MotF Contest  Otherwise, I've been looking into ones in my area (Toronto, Canada) but there seem to be very little interest in the subject. I've set up a few contests of my own in my group MapsAndFlags however it's not consistent nor very official

No, all drawn in PS. It's a lengthy process. I discussed it a bit in the wip thread.
Yeah, there was a lot of enthusiasm early on and then energy kind of faded.
But still, it went strong for a good while.

This one was a real learning experience. I tried a whole bunch of things.
Most seemed to work okay. The color version should prove interesting too.
