Description

Another one from a set of maps I created for a client back in 2017 for a campaign loosely called Deliverance for the Skybourne setting from Drop Dead Studios.

The publication date was not certain, so I was told I could post them now rather than wait.

I will update with links when/if the game module goes to print. As of now, I have no link for the product.

The environment had a lot of airship travel and large desert regions.

This is one is sitting out in a vast desert of black sand.

The world was not like this when the town was formed.

It has to do with what occurred in the Skybourne setting.

The client didn't have me add labels so these are just some I added for a more finished look.

If you enjoy my work and want to support it, check out my patreon -www.patreon.com/imaginebetterw…

Edit - here's the sketches for the maps in this series

Thanks TI

Yes, it is impractical, but it was requested by the client.

They wanted the flow broken up for their own reasons.

This looks awesome! Do you remember how long it took you to create this map?
Love your work in general, btw!

Thank you Silja

I answered this same question once before over on the Cartographer's Guild and also had some of the sketches there too.

Here's the link to that - www.cartographersguild.com/sho…

The short answer is I don't actually recall.

That makes sense! I guess unless you have a timer right next to you when you work, it'll be pretty hard to pin point exactly how long a piece takes.
Anyhow, it looks fantastic!
Also thank you for the link and thank you for taking the time to answer my comment!
I really appreciate it!

My pleasure

I'm just really slack about keeping track of time.

I know other illustrators that do keep track.

I try, but I'm just bad about recording it.

I do try for really large projects. Like ones that take longer than a week.

Hey! Sorry for late answer!
That makes sense! I'm also really bad at keeping track of the time I spend on my projects so I can relate to what you're saying there!
I guess, in the end the most important thing is that the deadline is met, haha!

It’s like the inner-city of that one place in critical role

Critical role or the city

I am aware of the Critical Role thing.

I haven't watched or listened to it though.

Just wasn't sure what city.

I was just saying about how uninformed I am.

I'm so busy with work I miss a lot.

Fairy-Slayer [2018-07-10 01:48:32 +0000 UTC]

Clearly, the founders of this place had a kink for geometric order: triangles, some of those roofs at regular intervals, and the winding spiral path of the streets themselves. It's quite impressive in fly-over and probably pretty grand in person from a distance, especially from the nearby peaks. The tetrahedron temple looks pretty spiffy, and it's great to see the detailed view and cut-away in the margins; the view of the terrain adds to the desolate atmosphere of the region too and makes one more grateful for little places like Deliverance. Thanks for sharing.

Or both.

It's a beautyful and detailed map, nice!

The only problem, if you enter with a carriage through the gate of sand, and need to reach the House of the Silver Sign by the main road, you'll become dumb with so many turns! @.@

I just was thinking of the game Half Life, where for the sake of the plataforming the architecture was a mess. Don't worry though, the game is a relic now

Love it! Well, you know you always win me over with the darker color schemes alone, but I also really dig the cool spiral shape that the city has going on. A nice clean and polished look all around. Wonderfully done!

Not only does this look cool... but actually kind of brilliant from a defensive POV.

Was lucky enough to get a tour of Himeiji castle once (in Japan); it was also roughly laid out like a spiral for defensive reasons. It was extra devious though, because the treacherous path for an invading force to the main keep actually spiraled in an opposite direction to what seemed apparent from afar.  And the whole time, you're being funneled through a brutal killzone -exposed to archer positions, etc...

That's a good point.

The nature of a town/city can play a big role in its layout.

And whether that is restrictive or open.

Intriguing design. This place must have quite the thieves guild and merchant lobby. It's practically built to be un-policable and have districts run by powerful houses. I can quite easily image "tolls" being collected on some of the short cuts. Courtyards that are only seen by a select few. Spies, thieves and couriers who run the rooftops at night.

This is mesmerizingly cool! Really like the subtle views included on the top end, I made something like that a while ago, too, but yours and how you did it is much cooler and depicts much more skill

SirInkman In reply to SteffenBrand [2018-07-09 15:18:04 +0000 UTC]

I'll have to post the sketch pages at some point.

It was a bit accidental, not quite so much skill.

Part of it was planned though. Using the sketch of the terrain up top.

That was totally planned.

I'll try to post the sketches sometime in the next day or two.

Gotta get back to work now though.

SteffenBrand In reply to SirInkman [2018-07-11 11:36:55 +0000 UTC]

You really have to, I'd be interested.
Well, part of being skilled is noticing when an accident advances an illustration IMO

It was worth it, thank you for sharing.
(I btw like that EVERYTHING you draw seems professional with the added notes and sig) XD

Looking over your image, I think I found an error. Not sure, but above 'Of Corital' near the Bound Gate it seems to me that there is a small line of text to be missed. Same with 'Of Coarzeth' and 'Of Sahalesh'. Or am I wrong here? English isn't my first language and sometimes I don't know certain terms.

SirInkman In reply to SteffenBrand [2018-07-11 20:09:53 +0000 UTC]

haha. Well, I'm so used to sharing this stuff that I have a habit of signing everything

I add notes because I can forget things, as I have so many projects going at the same time.

And... it looks cool too.

Nope, that was just a way to subtly say that this set of buildings was "of the tribe of" or "of the House of" such and such, but without all of that text.

Sort of like Michael son of the house of Marik... Michael, of Marik. Condensing the text.

This one looks really cool John. Although i have an impression like the flat Near-Middle East roofs style does not fit the background..... but that is totally subjective impression. Overall really great stuff.

Always very inspirational.

SirInkman In reply to N-Horizons [2018-07-09 15:16:08 +0000 UTC]

It was a client choice, so it's what I created for them.

They were thinking more of pueblo style buildings, which is what I referenced.

So technically not Near-Mid East Far West hehe

Well, I guess townspeople there get a lot of foot exercise if they have to get something 'across' town. Cobblers must make a brisk business with all that shoe leather being worn down with unnecessarily long winding roads.

SirInkman In reply to 1Wyrmshadow1 [2018-07-09 14:31:49 +0000 UTC]

Indeed

The client had the plan for the spiral roads.

I tried to make a few shortcuts, but, yes, it would still be trouble.
