they are grease paints which you can also pick up at the Halloween store or costume shop

For a moment I was nervous that it'd be some kind of exclusive brand that you can only get through a specific website or something ... I was going to instead just break the candles out of storage or go buy some of that leg-waxing wax (lol).

I used to do it to myself all the time, not take photos, but cut myself. Wasn't a fun time in my life. BUT if you want a more real look...well it's difficult to advise. For example, what you have here looks like whatever "scratched" the hand here was done at a sideways angle, like as if the blade (or whatever sharp object) was parallel to the back of the hand. If it was like a direct scratch, the sides of the skin should be equal in height with the rest of the hand, nothing should really come up unless a razor blade was implanted in your hand and pulled out from under the skin. The only rise in skin that should be seen should only be a little bit of swelling.
Like the top of the scratch here is almost perfectly perfect and the rest of the scratch should conform to that.

huh, in the thumbnail I thought this was someone's back, so it confused me until I realized it was the back of a hand. Very cool and impressive fake wound though, lol
