The latest free art lottery winnerwanted me to paint Red Sonja. Here she is.
There are probably many disappointed ones who say "there's no metal bikini!!"

The chainmail bikini truly isn't armor, but apparently it isn't even supposed to be. Chains are just a decoration. Red Sonja is like Conan, mostly naked.
But every time Conan goes to war he wears the best armor available. Surely so should Red Sonja.

Nothing pissed me off more than realizing that the writer and illustrator who created the legend of Red Sonja had very different goals in mind for how her character should be.

I prefer this over the threadkini, it lets one focus on the more important parts of her. Β Like her FACE. Β You've drawn her so beautifully here. Β Her expression is raw and fierce, very fitting for the warrior she is supposed to be. Β And I am in love with her armour, the detailing is excellent! Β Thanks for sharing this!

Almost Β perfect! Why almost... i dunno.. That body armor seems out of place somehow. cant put my finger on it but its bothering me somehow.

It's got something to do with the texture. When something is "exactly something" I tend to get lazy. Too much law and order. Besides I have never learned how to use any texture-twisting methods. (I don't actually even know if there are any texture-twisting methods in the PSP7!)

Why?
Because Red Sonja never wears sensible armor! She often wears her trademark scale bikini or blue furs or a mail shirt and hot pants, but never sensible armor.

It will be the other way around. Bikini Sonia will be on the snow with her stomach cut open, bleeding all over the place while Actually Armored Sonia looks down on her with a victorious smile.

Sorry, but Sir Tiefling already said that the armored Red Sonja is a pretender, thus I don't believe that she has a chance against the real Red Sonja.

Ermegershomg. Oh my Gosh. No Bikini. She looks like a legit badass. I love this, I love you for making it. I /like/ the bikini if it's a pin up, but when it's the actual character, all I can think of is how impractical it is and loathe it.

It's a Japanese Onigiri. It's a type of rice ball. So yes (in a sense).

Great work. The outfit reminds me a lot of the one she wore in her later Marvel appearances. FWIW, I like the scale bikini but I like the idea of Sonja wearing different clothes in different environments or for different missions and contrary to popular belief, Dynamite went that route a lot in the latter half of her last series. In one story, she even wore a basic vest top and leggings, about as plain as you can get. The bikini's part of her legend even in her own stories and helps with her intimidating opponents - in 'Red Sonja Blue', she wasn't even recognised by robbers because she wasn't wearing the bikini. As for the lack of protection offered by it, well, Sonja's just that damn good in battle, it's virtually impossible to tag her! I went with the bikini in my own Sonja pics but this is a really nice piece of work. Well done.

Yep! Bad guys associate the metal bikini with pain and backside-kickings! Like I said, in the Blue series, a band of brigands held up Sonja. She told them who she was and they hesitated, scared to attack her ... but then they decided she couldn't be Red Sonja because there was no metal bikini in sight. True story! It's a really good series that, actually, the best Dynamite have produced so far IMO.
