6/9/23 UPDATE: New design, name, and typing!

I've been meaning to give this line a makeover for a while now, partly because of something I may or may not be planning for it and this region as a whole, and partly because my view on the older designs for it has changed over the years, arguably for the worse. Now that I've learned more about fakemon design sensibilities from a number of fakemon creators on YouTube, I've come to look back at the older versions of this line with a little disdain because they honestly looked rather boring. Most of the regional bird Pokemon at least try to do something interesting with their design and concept, even if they don't entirely succeed sometimes. For this new version, I not only had a slightly different theme in mind for this line from the get-go but also decided to start from that instead of the animal inspirations specifically. Squaylor in particular (for that is his new name) is now more stylized and partly based on this unused sprite from the beta version of Pokemon Gold and Silver. Having the body be egg-shaped fit quite well, actually! As for the new name, I felt it more fitting of the dirty, unkempt appearance of this new design, because the updated theme was essentially a "rags to riches" plot, a humble and dirt-poor little guy who gradually works his way up to the top. You'll see what I mean when I update the other two stages of this line in a little bit!

7/22/19 UPDATE: New design!

Finally got this done, sort of! This design was one of those whose concept is still fresh and creative in my mind, but whose artwork has not aged well, especially compared to how the canon Pokémon style. It didn't even look like the canon common birds in comparison, partly since I had initially designed them in a vacuum without looking at their specific aesthetics. So I decided to rework the stuff I liked best into a cleaner new design that I had initially wanted to give a royalty theme, including feathers like a "robe" on the torso. It didn't look that good on him, though, so I instead thought about the look of kimono sleeves and how depictions of people wearing them in ancient East-Asian artwork typically have the hems touching each other with the hands together, and gave the wings that same look (see the inset drawing). Much better! I know old-world quails don't have that distinct head plume of a California quail, but in spite of what the "Basis" section says, this guy wasn't meant to represent any quail species in particular, just the group in general. I also gave the female the same color brightness as the male, so the color scheme would be easier to remember in case someone somehow wanted to make a 3D model sprite for these birbs (which you're more than welcome to if you so choose, btw!).

Next stage remake should be up sometime today, hopefully!

Birb? BIRB 8D

Moving on with the common early-game 'mon templates, here's the regional bird of this region, Quailegant! I was originally going to be an American robin that evolved into a red-tailed hawk, but I ultimately scrapped it because it simply wasn't unique or distinctive enough from the previous "songbird to raptor" 'mons that already exist in canon. Fletchling's line had a pretty good way of distinguishing itself from the previous ones with both a final form type combo other than Normal/Flying and a good ability, but it's still a robin that becomes a falcon. I decided to do something a little different with this line and base my regional birds off... well, you'll see pretty soon

Anyways, Quailegant is birb. The movepool is a combination of Fletchling and Starly: Fletchling provides Peck, Agility, Roost, Natural Gift, Acrobatics, Tailwind, and Steel Wing, while Starly lends Quick Attack, Wing Attack, Double Team, Aeiral Ace, and Final Gambit. Both lend starting move Tackle, and Double Slap, Double Kick and Screech are there for flavor.

The stats likewise are based on these two birdies, but with an emphasis on defense instead. The 45 HP is taken from Fletchling but the 55 Defense is from Starly's Attack stat, and the 40 Attack is just shy of Fletchling's 43 defense. The 30 special attack is from Starly and the 40 Sp. Def. is from Fletchling's 40 Sp. Atk. Speed is lastly taken from Starly, at 60.

Quailegant is a speedy waller, a bit of an oddity among the regional birds who are otherwise physical attackers. This distinction will become more apparent upon evolution, and it should be pretty obvious why once I reveal the next two stages.
