Description The Night Terror Pokémon
"Unlike its pre-evolution, NANGHOOLA typically Roosts and hunts alone. Its eerie headplate helps it emit Supersonic waves to navigate in the dark, and it can also emit a terrible scream that can carry for many miles."
"Natives of the jungles this Pokémon calls home claim that if it spots prey wandering around at night, it swoops down and covers it in its cape-like wings. Then, it plunges its sharp fangs into its victim and tears out their soul."

Basis: Megaderma lyra, or the greater false vampire bat; Manananggal ; Ahool; cloaks/funeral shrouds; glowing scary face effects; The Scream painting; banshees. This line's typing is a visual pun on ghost bats, the common name for Macroderma gigas, to which the greater false vampire bat is closely related.
Name Origin: ManaNANGgaL+GHOuL+AhOOL+DracuLA

** Phantom Fang

Category: Physical
Type: Ghost
Power: 65

**********

"Darkness falls across the land. / The midnight hour is close at hand.
Creatures crawl in search of blood, / To terrorize y'awl's neighborhood.
And whosoever shall be found, / Without the soul for getting down,
Must stand and face the hounds of hell, / And rot inside a corpse's shell."

What? Cryptoola is evolving! Congratulations, your Cryptoola has evolved into Nightmare Fuel of the High Octane variety!  As noted previously, it's taken me multiple attempts to nail a proper bat design and all of the ones before this haven't been successful. I guess it's because they all went for a stereotypical scary bat beast that eventually becomes draconic, which would ultimately become redundant now that Noivern exists. Cryptoola was a step in the right direction but for her evolved form I had to think a little more creatively than simply making her bigger and fang-ier. The Scream mask on the face, inspired by the weirdly shaped face leaves of many real bats and bogleech's Slashriek  from his fantastic Mortasheen project, was my initial solution, since the pre-evo already has the Scary Face theme going for her, but while I improvised the rest of the body with a typical cape-like wing arrangement, a "mane" on the neck, and a slender waistline, it occurred to me only a good while later that with the leathery wings, the mane resembling a woman's hair, the human-like face "mask", the predatory habit, and most importantly the wasp-waist splitting the torso into two main portions, I'd inadvertently hybridized a ghost bat with a monster from Southeast Asian lore that does not get nearly enough appreciation from monster fans: the Manananggal.

What is a Manananggal, you may ask? Well, allow Wikipedia to explain: "The Manananggal (sometimes confused with the Wak Wak and Aswang) is a vampire-like mythical creature of the Philippines, a malevolent, man-eating and blood-sucking monster or witch. ...The manananggal is described as scary, often hideous, usually depicted as female, and always capable of severing its upper torso and sprouting huge bat-like wings to fly into the night in search of its victims. The word manananggal comes from the Tagalog word tanggal, which means "to remove" or "to separate", which literally translates as "remover" or "separator". In this case, "one who separates itself". The name also originates from an expression used for a severed torso." I'm pretty sure there's a strict limit against gore and explicit body horror, but keep in mind that Cryptoola's torso was one solid piece, so her waistline pretty much slimmed down so much during evolution that it feels like she got bisected. Ouch! The membrane wings, frightening appearance, and blood-drinking habits also mesh well with a bat monster in the same way that the Ahool already does, so even if she isn't half the bat she used to be, I still liked the connection enoughs to give her a name partly derived from that horrifying hag.     :bademoticon:

As an aside, this is in no ill will to the other bat fakemon designs I've seen around here, but I've noticed that a good number of the ones with a vampire motif end up looking a little too anthropomorphic a la Lucario, so on that note I tried my damndest to make Nanghoola avoid looking like a furry. I still think she has a slight "bat fursuit" vibe in spite of my efforts, but that may be due to the Manananggal being humanoid in the first place. Oh well. :/

And here's some support artwork featuring the wings and flight profile of this thing, along with how both stages fold up their wings and ears while sleeping: batty doodles

Nanghoola is a nightmare to run into not only in a dark alley, but in battle as well! Despite being only slightly more durable than a used tissue, she's absurdly fast, can cut you to ribbons with just a touch, and can boost her shredding power with Hone Claws in case she wants overkill for breakfast. Three immunities and a solid offensive type combo can't hurt either, though her weaknesses to Stealth Rock and three common priority moves - Ice Shard, Sucker Punch, and Shadow Sneak - very much can. I based her stats on Crobat and Noivern, two other powerful and speedy bat Pokémon: both share their 80 Defense and Special Defense and their 85 HP with Nanghoola, while Crobat lent his 130 Speed. Nanghoola has a much higher physical Attack than both, though, with a whopping 115 compared to Crobat's 90 and Noivern's 70, but pays for it with a much lower Special Attack, at a mere 50, compared to Crobat's 70 and Noivern's 97. The resultant stat total, 540, is just 5 points higher than Noivern - and, incidentally, the exact same as Nanghoola's version counterpart, Orntherub. I also gave her three additional moves to play with in the form of the new HP-restoring Soul Eater, which works well in conjunction with Lifesteal for recovery, the also new Reaper Scythe for extra crits, and Phantom Force to bypass barriers like Toxapex's Baleful Bunker or Aegislash's King's Shield.       :bademoticon:

Whereas her Zenith counterpart blows the competition away with powerful special attacks, this fearsome bat-hag is a purebred physical sweeper who takes down her prey by outspeeding it, intercepting it, and shredding it apart! Unburden combined with Fling and STAB Acrobatics (Heh, Acro-BAT-ics! ) allows her to outfly damn near everybody and hit with enough force to slice anyone who doesn't resist the Flying type cleanly in half! For added punch you could try giving her an Iron Ball, but I wouldn't recommend it due to how hard it is to get her into play in the first place, with her mediocre HP and defenses and her type weaknesses, but it's worth considering. Alternatively, you can forgo Fling and give her a Flying Gem (if those end up being used in Sundo) to boost her Acrobatics automatically like with Hawlucha or Archeops, or a Liechi Berry if you feel like that 130 Speed is too slow. Alternatively, her attack power is strong enough for her to make use of even subpar Ghost-type STAB like Shadow Claw, but the aforementioned Soul Eater and Reaper Scythe are much preferable, as is Phantom Force to bypass walls like the above-mentioned Toxapex. Coverage options include Fire Fang and Crunch as egg moves to take down other Ghost-types and Ice-types which might otherwise threaten her, Steel Wing for Rock- and Fairy-types, U-Turn for scouting and Dark-type checking (and X-Scissor for the latter), and Cross Poison and Poison Fang in case of more godd@mn Fairies. Support options include Taunt to shut down walls, Toxic to put them on a timer, Torment to prevent threats from abusing STAB against her, and that much-loathed batty classic, Confuse Ray. That leaves her only guaranteed threat being Electric types who have a chance of outpacing her, so team support with Ground-type defense would be useful. Nanghoola is very much a skirmisher with her focus on speed and offense, but why worry about bulk when you can just murder everyone before they can fight back?

This is probably the last fakemon I'll be posting this month, and how appropriate it is that it's a spooky bat monster with October starting next week. Hope you like it, and let the Halloween festivities commence!

"The foulest stench is in the air, / The funk of forty thousand years,
And grizzly ghouls from every tomb, / Are closing in to seal your doom.
And though you fight to stay alive, / Your body starts to shiver.
For no mere mortal can resist, / The evil of the thriller!"
