Description
MEGA WAILORD (WAIL+LORD, sounds like "whale lord")
- Water/Ghost
- Ability: Bait Ball*Wailord's Mega Evolved form is Mega Wailord and can be accessed using the Wailordite.
"Upon mega-evolving, WAILORD infuses itself with the vengeful spirits of all the fish Pokémon it has eaten. Said to avenge crimes against the sea, when it opens its mouth, it sends out all the spirits within its gut with a haunting cry that is regarded as a terrible omen."
"WAILORD used to be extensively hunted by humans, so mega-evolving one unleashes its grief and anger over the loss of its kin during such times. Channeling the ghosts of prey it consumed, it will devastate the coast until those who provoked it have set things right."
BST: 170/75/105/75/105/70 - 600

NOTE: Wailord can now learn Venoshock, Shadow Ball, and Sludge Wave via TM, Spite and Icy Wind via tutor, and Shadow Trap* and TerrorScream* as egg moves respectively from Marspicable and Exploud (who gets TerrorScream as a relearnable).
* Shadow Trap

Here it is, a new update for the first time in quite a while and a new mega whose idea I've had for even longer still! For the longest time I've wanted to use a skeletal Water/Ghost whale and for a while I considered having a starter Pokémon based on that idea along with sperm whales and narwhals back when I still wanted to create multiple regions all at once with different sets of starters - yes, really - but it hasn't really worked out as well as I thought (though at least the art was nice). I may still reserve a massive toothed whale for a different region in the future as a regular, but for now, Mega Wailord will do. Besides, it's unfair that Sharpedo got a mega in canon while his fellow Water-type right next to him on the national Pokédex did not! Of course, all the megas I've seen have simply involved adding extra fins and markings and maybe giving him an additional Flying type to reference his looking like a blimp (not to mention jokes about the entire screen on the 3DS or Switch turning blue when Wailord mega-evolves), so I decided to think outside the box and slap the Water/Ghost typing on my own version along with some rather disturbing flavor. I mean, some existing dex entries speak of Mega Gengar trying to kill everyone for the lulz, Mega Aerodactyl being enraged from constant pain, a few others like Garchomp and Scizor experiencing body horror, and so on, so I wager my Mega Wailord would fit right in. Besides, there was no mention of whaling in any of Wailord's canon dex entries, which disappoints me to some degree - and that leads me to my next point.
How many people have contemplated the possibility of a bake-kujira based on Wailord before? To explain, it's a yokai that's a floating skeletal whale, accompanied by strange mutated fish and birds as well as plagues upon sea life that devastate the environment. It isn't indiscriminate, though, only appearing near coastal regions that have desecrated the ocean, especially via senseless excess whale-hunting; only by ritualistic expression of penitence can it be appeased. With this in mind, instead of making Wailord either more floaty or simply way too big, I decided to take him for a folkloric spin, especially since one of the moves he learns via level-up is Astonish, a Ghost-type move. The other part of the concept was that I wanted to represent the strange fish in the form of a Wishiwashi-style shoal surrounding Wailord's body, allowing him to change form at half-health or below - his original ability literally was Schooling, in fact. I struggled to make it work until I remembered that Wailord eats Wishiwashi, so why not turn all those fish into the ghosts of his prey and have them emerge from inside his mouth? The shoal was going to be way more complicated than what you see here but early-access feedback wasn't too fond of that, since it overshadowed the concept and Schooling is supposed to be an exclusive form-changing ability. So I made up a replacement ability that fit what I had in mind better, and also toned the shoal down quite a bit and had it simply looking like a second mouth, Xenomorph style, albeit with the fish ghosts forming a whole extra head just to make it creepier. (As an aside I might revise the shiny so the ghostly vapor and fish spirits are green rather than blue, to emphasize the poisonous theme; I'm sure it'd look like barf, though, so I might have second thoughts...)
Anyhow, Wailord has a stat spread of 170/90/45/90/45/60. The +100 had to be distributed between everything except HP because that doesn't change during mega evolving and Wailord has an absurd amount of that already lol. I actually started with the Bait Ball form first, putting 10 into Speed, 15 to each of the offenses, and 30 to each of the defenses, giving him monstrous attack and special attack and mediocre defense. Then I realized that if I had the offensive form out first, and it switched to the defensive form at 50% HP, it'd be like Darmanitan's Zen Mode in that it wouldn't quite work as a tank with the HP already depleted. So the defensive form with the mouth shut is the default one, so those 105 defenses and that ridiculous HP can be capitalized upon, but woe betide (ba-dum-tsh) anyone who ends up whittling him down to half-health, because he'll unleash his shoal at that point and cause a total party-wipe without a contingency plan!
Since Astonish is already learned by Wailord in canon, I gave him a few more Ghost moves for STAB (including one from cj1206 that fits his flavor perfectly), and of course he's already got quite a punch in terms of Water attacks. Immunities to the Normal and Fighting types are nice, but he's got Ghost, Grass, Electric, Dark, and especially Light weaknesses to worry about, so a few Poison attacks in keeping with the bake-kujira poisoning sea life help against Grass, and Earthquake via TM beats Electric foes. However, this leaves Ghost and Dark with no counters, which is hilariously ironic when you consider that holy rites more akin to Psychic, Fairy, and my own fanmade Light typing (which indeed beats both Water and Ghost) would be more appropriate. The only means of countering the Light type is Icy Wind via tutor since Light is weak to Ice (though for what it's worth, 105 Special Attack in Bait Ball form would make even an Icy Wind from him nothing to sneeze at), but without that, the poor guy would be SOL. So all in all he's a powerhouse, largely defensive but with a nasty surprise for an unprepared foe, but there are enough means of banishing him from whence he came that he isn't completely indestructible. Still, he's a badass-looking ghost whale! What more do you need?
I've got a few megas to go, and a bunch of remakes as well, prior to the finale for this region - but for now I've got stuff to reveal first that'll hopefully be out next week. Stay tuned!
