Description
Here's one of those artist trading card things.
I've had them for a while now, and wanted to try
something simple. I practiced drawing the four main
ninja from NinjaGo in different colouring styles. Here
is the Copic version; Jay.
I've finally got that look I was trying to get
with shadows and such for a while now!
Yeah, it only took me five months, and many
attempts to finally realize that I can layer the
markers like crazy!
Other than the dark eyebrows and eye,
I actually like the light effect I recreated
with this. I was trying to get this effect
for a long time! So please; tell me what
you think! Is there anything that I need
to improve here?

Beautiful is word that I would describe this. The shading, the technique, the vision you were going for. It's beautiful.
I might be nitpicking here, though, about the background. Sorry! I know you worked hard on this sketch card. But it would be nice to see a little detailed background here.
Other than that, it's absolutely gorgeous. I see the expression fits Jay so clearly.
....*flips a table* Why can't I do something like this?!
Oh well, I'll get there. Keep it up as you have a fine eye for drawing and for shading.

That's alright. I wanted the background to look like a
harsh, bright light (so the shadows could make more
sense). But yes, backgrounds are nice.
Just keep challenging yourself, and try improving little
by little (rather than stressing over the need to improve
large parts). It'll take time, but I find that trying to make
at least one tiny thing in each artwork I produce better
than the last helped me get to where I am. Good luck~!

The highlights in his hair look good,
and his facial expression suits him.
But how did you color him without lineart?

He was surprisingly the quickest to make;
and this colouring was completely accidental.
When trying to add blue shadows, I've used
a blue that was too dark. So I layered a bunch
of markers to blend that.
There was some light pencil lines that I
kneaded off, then I guess the many layers
of marker washed the excess off. Though I
wish that I didn't use the black fineliner. It
completely subrtacts from the soft lighting.

I've never thought of using
blue shadows before.

The lack of lineart makes it seem
more professional in a way.

I was staring at my arm for a while, wondering
what hidden colours are in there, then I noticed
that my shadow had a slightly bluish-tone to it.
I've also found some green, yellow, purple, and
orange.
That's what I was trying to aim for (but
then I messed up on the eyes/brows).

at everything trying to see how many hidden colors there are.
I think the line art brings out his eye more.
It maintains his cartoon-y...ness.
