A small drawing I long owed dear
Here you see what would happen when, as she asked, "SkekSil (what's more, my personal version of him) Meets suddenly with SkekMara, the small curious gellfing he raised in her story! Add up Kaia, the gelfling servant to SkekSil in my imaginarium...and JACKPOT!

Absolutely... so darn creepy... but he does feel like it when they capture Jen and Kira, and he mentions how he missed the days when their were plenty of gelflings to capture and drain... so you think he'd like a world in which they would be "farming" gelflings in order to drain them of their youth... b/c he mentions how the podlings just aren't as "good" b/c they don't produce enough "essence" when drained... so creepy...

These two re left to hope the Chamberlain really feels in the mood of sparing them!

Here it goes...sorry if it ain't shorter, it's as condensed as I could get it:
I set this story some 160-or-so - years before the movie events (lots of time in terms of gelflings, who are assumed to have a lifespan barely longer tha a human's, even though they mature slower and remain with a younger appearance for longer time. Rather short time for a skeksis, who might live 1000 years or more, even if old and decrept, as far as we know)
Well, in this epoque, the gellings from the villages nearby the Castle had known by rumors about the recently started essence drainings, the terrible news brought by an escapee guard from the Castle who had seen what was done to some gelflings whenever the skeksis Emperor looked sick.
So, the gelflings who once went willingly to serve under the skeksis' command and enjoyed a rather good life in the castle, started to boil in rebellion (but who wouldn't?)
Now we focus on the castle. The Chamberlain receives a very important sealed scroll, sent by the Hunter, SkekMal, who is the only skeksis who still wanders about the borderlands bringing news, and apparently has a very important thing to warn the Emperor about, directly.
The Chamberlain receives the scroll to deliver to the Emperor and is piqued by intrigue but cannot unseal because it would mean breaking the secrecy law.
The Chamberlain has a gelfling servant, Kaia, who sheepishly follows him around, carrying the things needed to deliver to the Emperor in a satchel.
We see how she acts extremely dutiful to him, and almost is questionable why she is so devoted.
Just arriving at the outer yard of the castle which they should cross to reach the door to the inner sections and the Throne room, something truly bizarre happens: a wild big predator called Rakkida *which looks like a panther and a reptile mixbreed* pounces on them all of the sudden. Barely dodging the beast, both skeksis and gelfling dash inside of a stretch (yet spacious enough) cracking in one of the corridor's walls, whih the Chamberlain luckily remembered well to be there, since the Architect had died before it was repaired, and noone else had ever cared to fix it.
Inside that crack in the wall - where the gelfling fits uncomfortably but the skeksis fits truly squeezed, having to permanently remain standing as to not risk falling backwards to the outside- the two characters spend almost all the rest of the story, talking to each other to try and pass time while they strive to figure a way out, and dodge the eventual strikes from the beast, which, much like big cat in it's stubornness, stays around, waiting for them to come out.
While jumping in, the Chamberlain's tail is torn by the beast's fangs (which luckily err their goal of truly taking hold of it* and is tended by the gelfling who can barely move as to aid him with a torniquet improvised with a torn section of her dresse's hem.
Even though the Chamberlain attempts to fascinate the beast to force it leaving, it doesn't work.
He starts to wonder how could that animal pass the door sentries and enter the castle...devoured by a latent suspicion, he unseals the scroll, plotting an excuse to tell the Emperor *whenever he and his gelfing were rescued* that it was "acidentally torn at the seal while he fended from the beast"
By the scroll he realizes the Hunter has discovered a true rebellion brooding in all the gelfling vilages which may soon fall upon them.
He is terrified but does his best to not allow his servant to know what's in his head...the idea that the Rakkida was introduced to the Castle intentionally as a murder attempt horrifies him.
THERE must be a rebel in disguise among the door guards, if not more than one.
Defeated, hungry, crushed by the tight confinement of the walls that have torn his robes to pityful tatters and are too stretch for him, pained, loosing blood through his tail wound and tired, the Chamberlain starts to speak with his servant gelfling,Kaia in attempt to remain conscious*who he evidently considers a base and low being, though we know later that he is not as bad as he sounds to her.
Like this we come to know how harsh he may appear to her amidst hunger pain and fear *hours pass , almost an entire day as they're trapped witin that crack* but also we see how they start to slightly know more of each other as they talk, something they had never done so far.
The gelfling, since she can't do sny other thing, offers her Master to entertain him with a story while they wait "to be rescued".
And she tells him about herself.
How her parents were nomad shepherds of some creatures called Mounders, and how she lost them when she was only a child, killed when a pack of rakkidas attacked the herd.
She lost them to teh predators and also irrepairably broke her wings, due to the fact that she was sitting astride one of their animals and fell off amidst the attack.
Rescued from the scene from some villagers of a woodland clan, she was raised by many neighbors of the settling, as "everybody's child"...despite their afection and care, she always felt alone nd misplaced, and hated knowing the other girls would learn to fly soon, while her wings were torn and useless.
She started to dream of leaving and so heard of the Crystal castle, and dreamt of serving there, and have a different and *as she saw it* better life.
She indeed managed to pass the servant selection during one of the visits of one delegate to retrieve new help for the castle. There she first saw the Chamberlain and he dazzled her with his jewels, red velvet robes, and tall stature.
She sworn herself to find a way to serve him somehow and mentally thought him as "her rightful Master"
There, we know the General and theScientist indeed assigned Kaia to the Chamberlain in scorning, due to her "defective broken wings".
And yet, she tells him she is glad to serve him and no other because (as she says) While many of the other skeksis Masters were cruel and violent to their servants , he "has never hit her", "always is as kid as he can when he addresses her" and "feeds her very well, even sparing sweets for her after the feasts"
The Chamberlain shows himself surprised and inwardy admits to himself he possibly has always been too soft to her. He is worried that she thinks to mcuh of herself because of it, and that if the other skeksis think he somehow "spoils his servant and indulges her" he would lose respect and seriousness.
However, the gelfling has told him as many flattering ans sweet words as noone had before, and thy strike a fiber in him other than just vanity. He feels cherished, and he finds it strangely good.
When Kaia is telling the fatigued and hurt skeksis she is truly happy she hs him as Master because he "cares for her", he suddenly think it is too much, revolves in the excessive confidence of the gelfling and is about to tell her to not take him for granted, when the Rakkida strikes again, impatient. A storm has unleashed outside, and it only makes it more nervous and eager for food.
Amidst the strife to dodge the animal and the impossibility to draw further ito the hideout, the Chamberlain gets his sleeves torn off completely by the beast, and does his best to nt faint *he already is truly sick and torn by hunger, thirst and blood loss* Kaia has energy enough to try to pull him further in, but with no use: he is far too big.
The beast draws back momentarily, only to strike again even more fiercely moments later.
Now, the Chamberlain, absolutely deranged and beyond his coping, strikes back at it and tries to claw it, but since he barely can move within the crack, he reaches his head to it in a crazed boldness, and bites the beast's sensitive snout with incredible force.
The beast draws back yelping. It bleeds and is truly furious, but unused to pain, it remains rubbing it's injured snout with t's paws for a moment.
Within the crack, the Chamberlain faints and Kaia, despaired, shakes him and even slaps him, thinking he has died. Since night has fallen hours ago she can't even see him, but he can feel his limp form and weeps, trying to stir him.
The Chamberlain, pityfully exhausted, wakes with a whimper.
Kaia holds him, unable to control her emotions, and nestles against his chest, telling him how worried she was.
She asks him to "not die on her"...Terribly pained by the animal's attacks and the terrible thirst and hunger, the Chamberlain tries to loosen her embrace, for he finds it painful, and also indecent from aservant to touch him like that... even at the brink of death trying to keep his dignity.
Kaia refuses to let go, and says she can't lose ALSO him, and then she suddenly blurts out "he is like a father to her, like the father she didn't have before"
SkekSil had been about to shove her off, and instead, strickn by such words, he almost unwillingly holds her. Feeling a strange thing in his eyes and throat, he silently cries, hoping the gelfling doesn't notice.
The rakkida roars and SkekSil, now imbued with a sort of protective instinct, bristles up his back spines and offers his hard back to the entrance, in attempt to shield the gelfling from the attack...which never comes!
Finally, the Emperor accepted the Chamberlain would not come and sent for him.
It was not soon until the beast was discovered in the yard, since it had been still and crouched, waiting for it's preys.
Hearing his fellows outside, the Chamberlain calls for help and Kaia and himself are rescued by the First General, SkekVar, and the Second General SkekUng .
They're taen back to the castle in pityful state, and SkekSil makes sure to confirm to the Emperor in secrecy about the possible incoming rebellion as he delivers the scroll.
He of course says nothing about the issue with the gelfling.
Later, after he ate voraciously and was measured to make him new robe parts to repair the torn ones, he watches Kaia sleep, and wonders why he let her hold him nd tell him that thing about him being "like a fater to him"...
Laying on his bed, he questions himself and tell himself it shall surely NOT be AFFECTION, and less even LOVE...not for a gelfling!
Yet, he KNOWS he felt the impulse to protect her...and knows too, that she hadn't lied or misunderstood...he had always secretly cared for her.
As he falls asleep, her words still whirl in his mind.
That he is "like a father to her".
We cut to the valey of the Mystics where his counterpart, UrSol the Chanter, feels a sudden empathic sensation coming to him from far, from SkekSil...and then through him, we know it actually is a tender and deep fatherly love.
THAT would be the story.
Now which is the link between Kira and Kaia?
WELL, Movie wise, there is a scene many have discussed:when the Chamberlain capures Kira and brings her before the others to reingratiate and be returned his charges and home, he seems obviously eager to please...yet, he has a lapsus, during a moment, where he refuses to deliver her, claiming "NO! SHE'S MINE!"
Why, if later he will deliver her?
WHY, if everyone already had seen who had caught and brought her?
A fan friend asked me why I thought he had shielded Kira that way during such instinctive lapsus...
And that question sprouted the story I just told you!
That is my addition and explanation for it: After Kaia dies, possibly reclaimed as all her kind by the gelfling culling to stop the prophect that said the gelflings would destroy the skeksis, the Chamberlain, completely powerless to help or save her, would be inwardly torn by it and yet he would have to eat his feelings and remain cold and dettached in order to save his own life.
Turning every day more bitter, self interessed and grudging now the little one he had came to think of as a child of his had gone, he watched the Emperor die with pleasure, after having lost Kaia under his demand "No gelflings shall be left alive, not even the loyal ones, not even the servants at the castle"
Then it all happens as the movie shows us, to the point where he tries to lure Jen and Kira to the castle as a "ticket back home".
BUT...
Things "sudenly get real" for him when he drags Kira in, the others see her and she suddenly revolves and almost presses to him as she tris to escape the others' prying yes and talons.
Suddenly, feeling her that close and suddenly stricken by the likeness she had to another gelfling he knew too well, he suddenly feels as if he were holding Kaia again, trying to sare her from the rakkida, within the cracked wall.
That's why he breaks out with the scream of "She is mine!" and shileds her from the oters...only to feel self-ashamed a moment later: This is NOT his Kaia, she's just a random gelfling who looks too much like her.
Then he delivers her to the Scientist, trying to not abhorr himself for doing it, and focusing in his reward: he is back home.
SAD. CRUEL AND RATHER DEPRESSING...
But hopefully worthy enough!

So...that's why Kaia looks so much like Kira: their likenesses are thought up to bring that "SkekSil's awkward exhabrupt" scene! ^^

So, Kira and Kaia are just look-alikes that struck a chord with the Chamberlain. I was thinking Kaia was a relative or something. ... Maybe a cousin from another village?

Anyway, one thought that sticks with me when seeing the Gelfling slaves in your art. They all seem to be suffering from Stockholm Syndrome. XD
It just seems kind of funny and a little weird that none of them seem to understand that they are slaves -- or if they understand, it doesn't seem to bother them, because they've been, I dunno, conditioned somehow to think that it's a good thing?
I mean, they look so happy and are smiling all the time, even when on a leash ...

GAHAHAH Not really so much...in some cases, it was a "sort of happy blindness" caused by the idea the gelflings had, at those times, that the skeksis were actually GOOD Lords and serving in the castle would bring them a "better"2 life, one more sophisticate, and ranked.
As with people, gelflings, even in ther naivety, strived for a life that would be richer, at some point and to their degree.
Of course as you see, many others (the vast majority indeed) had noticed what was happening when thngs started to go wrong, and an escapee door guardian from the castle spread the news to every village possible.
The ones at the castle, possibly used to that form of life, and preferring to have velvets and tasty food even if unable to be free, showed different degrees of "happyness" with their lives at the castle, depending much to how wel or bad thir masters and the other Lords treated them.
In the case of Kaia, I bet she was mostly happy with her life with the Chamberlain precisely because she sought to serve him, after feeling disconform with the life she had at the village. After entering the castle and realizing how other skeksis Lords treated their servants, she possibly understood that the castle wasn't a "dream world" as she had believed, and her dreams had been naive and foolish....however, seeing as SkekSil never hit her, and treated her as finely as he could without lowering himself before the other skeksis, she learnt to cope with his harsh words and commands, knowing she wouldn't be able to leave again and it would be best for her to adapt. Also, we have that she was an orphan, and the niche the villagers who tended for her had made her didn't quite fit for her...so, what place to return to would she yearn for?...none...another hint to why she would feel more or less "alright" with staying.
Now, to be honest, most of the skeksis' servants didn't have it light at all...many died prematurely...and were unhappy as could be. Many were killed trying to flee the castle...and one of the many in my role writing (Tari, Lord SkekKel's servant) truly lived in constant fear and worry to mess it and get killed.

The male to the left is Tari...and he's mortally afraid after being chosen. His sister Schosi (to the right) was more eager to live in the castle because she is younger, more naive, and believed it all would be a sort of exciting adventure...their characters are extremely different (almost opposite) although they get along well.

At this other drawing you can see how things went from then on: Lord Counselor SkekKel amuses himself terrifying his servant and ordering him to clean up the mess after he torments a podling slave he stole, just to dismember it. The poor gelfling wishes he could escape but is unable since everything is well guarded within the castle...
At the left we see Schosi working her arms off with grinding materials for ink making. SkekLa The Illustrator observes her, constantly correcting her way of grinding, and is rather harsh at her as she shows no mercy in terms on how the work must be done or how it shall look once ended. YET, after hard labor, Schosi knows her master always has a sort of tiny reward. In this chapter of the RP she secretly drew a tiny portrait of Schosi grinding the ink and gave it to her as a small token when she finished her work.
So...we have that, even the most meager display of affection from the usually hard and scowly skeksis tends to act as a sedative for the servant gelflings of the castle, and the ones who are better treated usually seem definitely "too smily for a slave"
It is mostly due to the fact that thy KNOW it could be much worse, and they have already no further choice into it...

Truly tired out of excess of work and lack of sales!
The economy of my coutry has gone berserk from some months on, and I am everyday poorer, sadly.
At summer noone's here at the capital city, everyone *who can afford it* flees to the seaside or for vacations abroad.
So...here I am, stuck, with no fairs to work on, and literally stretching the very few I can get to earn by particular requests. They barely are enough to survive now.
I hope things will settle back when march comes! Fairs should start then!

Yes it was very enthusiastic, but its also very sad in a sense, SkekMara doesn't know she's a gelfling, so SkekMara will have to keep this encounter secret from her SkekSil, but she will always cherish the moment of meeting a new friend. ^^ I do hope to have them keep in touch.

Aww, I couldn't but imagine this little gelfling but being enthusiastic of meeting someone who for some reason looks so much like her!
Also, SkekMara will have to truly hide this encounter "2on the other side" with this Sil and Kaia, and the fact that she has learnt she is a gelfling!
I went a little different from when I first drew her, true: more wild, wispy hair *more little orphaned thing look* and also allowed her wings to show, which in previous drawing wasn't truly well seen!
Even if she has that crystal on her back, her wings would still be there won't they? ^^

Yes, maybe this little encounter will be cannon in my story as well, but it might be in later chapters, there's so much I still have to go over in the story, but I feel that this will make a great spin-off title ^^
And I like this look, it suits her, and the wings... I was a little bit concerned with, I was thinking about her wings being encased in the crystal, almost like an Amber effect, which causes her slight discomfort, but now I'm thinking something entirely different

I wanted to make her robes and look stand out from other gelflings!
And her wings: I released her from the crystal growth, letting them spread normally although the crystal possibly stops them from folding completely to the back...which possibly makesher look a lot ike a fairy!
