#5: Buggy the Clown - One Piece

Into the home stretch now with only five left to go, and kick starting our Top Five it's Buggy the Clown. Oh, Buggy- Buggy, Buggy, Buggy... you piratical putz, you. Sure you're a schmuck, sure you're a push over wannabe, sure you probably turned half of the American audience away from your series just by existing and yes, I have added you in twice before but I just couldn't do this countdown without you! True, I probably should have ranked him lower, both because of that and because I mean, it's friggin' Buggy, but I just can't help it! Buggy has been and always will be my favorite villain from my favorite anime series so I just couldn't have him as anything less then among the Top Five, but also nothing higher then exactly 5, you know to make room for new comers and those way more deserving.

So okay, I've gushed a bit on the character. It's obvious I'm biased as I'm a One Piece die hard (you'd have to be after 900+ chapters) but what is it that makes me like him? Why did I gravitate to Buggy so immediately? Well, I think it's because he combined a lot of elements I like. Pirates, clowns, holding blades in between fingers, a pension for being over dramatic and flashy and, what I think is most important, is that for me he completely summed up the series of One Piece in one fell swoop. The minute you see a 'clown pirate' you immediately know this series isn't taking itself too seriously. It's fun, first and foremost but can be intense when need be, just like how Buggy at first comes off as a legit threat but is quickly reduced to a bumbling foil afterwards. He's a character you quickly come to both love and hate and his constantly fails afterward are just a delight to see but, much like our previous entry of Reala and Jackle, I think this will be the last we'll ever see of ole' Buggy in a countdown. I can't keep relying on the same characters after all and I think placing as number five is as good as he's ever gonna get. So take that as you will.
