Description
Fenfang Zhang sighed as she walked into the costume shop, hearing the door quietly close behind herself. The businesswoman didn't really want to get a Halloween costume, but her friend Valerie had sent her several insistent e-mails that this was the place to go, hands-down; that they could find her perfect outfit.
Fenfang didn't believe a word of it, but her curiosity had been piqued. Valerie was always the most grounded of her friends, so surely the woman had good tasted in clothing. Unfortunately, this shop seemed to be anything but good-thanks in no small part to the fact that it was empty.
"Hey, anyone want to sell me a costume?" Fenfang called loudly, waiting a few seconds to see if her words would merit a response. None came, and the woman groaned and shrugged her shoulders; looking throughout the shop to see what they had for sale.
There were pirate outfits; superhero costumes; even a couple of high-end sci-fi replicas that seemed pretty expensive. Fenfang whistled as she considered an outfit from one of her favorite shows; completely ignoring the more silly side of the store.
Behind the Asian's turned back were everything from clowns to mimes to toy soldiers; even a couple of sexy animal-girl and even full animal costumes sitting on the shelves. Even when she was a child, she'd ahve had no interest in such trivialities; and as an adult that only went doubly so.
The woman made a mental note of the outfit she had in mind as she turned for the back of the store; pausing at the sight of a rather interesting booth. It was yellow, red, and blue; painted garishly like a circus tent; and there was an inviting sign beside it that read: 'Magic Costume Booth' in bold letters.
"Maybe this is what Valerie was talking about..." Fenfang smiled, her heels quietly clicking on the wooden floor as she approached the closed room. She rapped on the door inquisitively a few times; then pulled it open to find it empty, save for a small contraption at one end and a mirror at the other.
"Huh." She said, a small smile on her face as she looked at a sign above the button. It promised a perfect outfit for whoever entered the booth; claiming the door would be locked until the occupant dressed themselves in their new costume to make sure it was a good fit.
It all sounded a little silly, but what did she have to lose? She was already here, and if this was what Valerie had so highly endorsed, then it had to be wort at least a look. The woman stepped into the booth and closed the door behind herself, not knowing of the adventure she was about to have.
"So... I just press you and you pick my perfect costume, huh?" Valerie grinned, bending down to tug at the small drawer below the button. It wouldn't give in the slightest, and she tilted her head to the side with a slight frown on her face. "Auto-locking... Interesting."
The Asian looked back up to the button, intrigued. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." She muttered, pressing her index finger against the shiny red object.
The second she did, a shudder ran through the entire booth, almost sending her to her knees. It didn't feel like an earthquake; rather that the booth was moving, shaking her for some unforeseen purpose-perhaps dramatic effect?
Fenfang didn't much appreciate it, and she made a mental note of the jarring experience, prepared to bring it to whoever ran this store. If she'd have fallen in here, she could have been seriously hurt; which would have been an easy lawsuit to win.
Before she could continue her litigious train of thought, the drawer under the button clicked loudly, opening up to reveal a folded costume. She looked down in surprise to see an outfit that was painted just as the booth was; complete with ostentatiously bright shoes and a rubber nose.
"A clown? Are you kidding me?" Fenfang scoffed. The businesswoman's professional life certainly carried into her personal one; and she wouldn't be caught dead in this! "Nice try, buddy. But I'm out of here."
She turned for the door and pulled on the handle, only to huff in quiet shock as she found it locked. "What the..." She muttered, pulling on it harder. Again, the door didn't budge; and the woman pursed her lips tightly.
"Well, if that's the way you want to play, then that's the way we're going to play." She grinned to herself as she pulled out her phone, only to groan aloud. Even though she'd taken a plan with 'America's number one carrier', there still wasn't any reception here. The box must be acting as some sort of Faraday cage, blocking her signal from getting out.
"Well, that's just lovely..." Fenfang muttered, pounding on the door. "Hey! Can anyone hear me? I swear to god, if I don't get out of here, I'm going to sue!"
"Did someone call for Silly Sue?" A bright and chipper voice sounded to her right, and Fenfang leaped in surprise, whirling towards the speaker.
"What the-" She began, finding the image of a clown in the mirror opposite her. The Asian blinked again to clear her eyes; then nodded with a slow smile as she regarded the image. "Not bad... Some sort of large flat-screen mounted into the wall?"
To her surprise, the clown responded; tapping on her clown nose and tilting her head to the side. "Well, gawrsh. Silly Sue doesn't know anything about those sorts of teck-now-lo-gees, but she does know a thing or two about clowns; and you have the makings of a great one!"
"Oh, ha ha." Fenfang replied flatly, a glare on her face as she regarded the clown. "That's rather charming, but I really have to be going. If you're an employee of this store, then I demand that you open this door and let me out this instant."
At that, Silly Sue laughed happily, patting her plump chest. "See? Like Silly Sue said; you're a perfect clown! That was a good joke; you know that Silly Sue is just a recording! Silly Fenfang-or should Silly Sue say... FennyFun!"
Hearing her own name spoken by the 'recording' was enough to send a shiver down Fenfang's spine, and she looked to the mirror dubiously, a sharp glint in her eyes. "Hold on... You know my name; yet you're a recording?"
Silly Sue covered her mouth with both hands; then giggled. "Oops! You caught me red-handed!" She pulled out a red balloon and twisted it into an oversized hand, laughing as though it was the funniest thing in the world.
Fenfang groaned with irritation, then turned to the door, preparing to kick it down. She didn't know much about how to break down a door; but she'd certainly seen a documentary where they did it. How hard could it be?
"Well hey there, FennyFun! Before you go breaking your heels, maybe you should think twice about that! First off, you'd better get out of that business skirt and into your clown pants; because everyone can see your panties if you lift your leg to kick my door! Second, you'd better put on some more sensible shoes, like these!" Silly Sue chirped and stomped a foot on the ground, sending a lout honk through the air.
Fenfang grit her teeth, hating that the clown did have a point. If she wanted to kick down that door, it would be better to do it in clothes that weren’t her own. What did she care if she tore up some clown pants and clown shoes; it wasn’t like she was going to wear them again anyways.
She sullenly stripped off her lowerwear, getting into the baggy pants of a clown and slipping her dainty feet into the pair of oversized shoes, hearing them honk as she wiggled her toes. Of course they were somehow perfect fits, despite their apparent size.
"Great!" Silly Sue chirped from the mirror, tugging on her collar. "But gawrsh, Silly Sue thinks that FennyFun would look a lot better in a clowny top as well! Not to mention that it’ll be just perfect to cover your arms for your big escape!”
"I guess I wouldn’t want to end up with a splinter…" Fenfang replied, her hands automatically working to slip off her business suit. She tugged the clown suit onto her body, shaking her arms out and noticing how much room there was in its baggy length.
“Of course; there’s nothing you can do to make me put that dumb nose on.” Fenfang said with a grin, shaking her head and picking up the rubber ball. She tossed it against the clown’s reflection on the mirror, only for it to fly back and latch onto her nose. The woman brought her hands up to tug it off; pausing as the clown waved her arms frantically.
“Well shucksy, FennyFun! I think that looks so great on you, that you might as well keep it on! How about you see if your wig goes with it?” Silly Sue grinned without any trace of guile, an expression that was enough to win the Asian woman over.
Fenfang shrugged and looked down at her clown nose; then looked up to the clown in the mirror. Now that she had a few minutes to think about it, the nose really did look good on her. “Well, if you insist…” She pulled her hair into a tight bun and placed the pink afro on her head, a small smirk on her face. If that stupid clown thought she couldn’t pull this look off; she had another thing coming!
“Sorry, but Silly Sue doesn’t think FennyFun looks really good… How about we try out her makeup, too? That’ll look real great on her once she gets out of this booth!” The clown clapped happily, and Fenfang rolled her eyes.
“Hey, if that’s what it’ll take to get out of here…” She slowly stripped out of her outfit until she was just in her wig, her polka-dotted bra and her polka-dotted panties. It was funny; she couldn’t remember putting those on this morning, but they felt right on her…
She shrugged and applied the makeup to her face and body, a thick white creamy coat that covered all of her tanned skin and replaced it with as shade as pure as snow. Then she put her baggy suit on one piece at a time, smiling as she delicately placed the ball over her nose once again.
"There, are you happy now?” Fenfang asked, looking to her reflection to find that Silly Sally's image was cupping her reflected arm, bringing it closer to her nose. It had the same effect on the real woman; and she blinked as she felt her fingers close around her round clown nose once again.
"Almost. Silly Sue just needs FennyFun to honk her nose." Silly Sue said, a wide smile on the clown's face as though nothing was wrong in the world.
Fenfang did as instructed, and a wave of childlike glee swept across her body as a loud horn’s honk filled the air. That was... It wasn't bad; it actually felt really good to squeeze her nose like that! Only… She gulped anxiously and looked back to the mirror, a dubious look in her eyes. "Wait… Something feels funny… Something’s not right…”
"The only thing not right is FennyFun's laugh! Come on, laugh with me; see how you're supposed to sound! Hyawk hyawk hyawk!" Silly Sue guffawed.
Fenfang whimpered as she felt laughter bubbling up from her throat, as though she was being tickled. "I'm-hee-not going to-hoo-lau..." She gulped, only for a shudder to run through her form. Her mouth was forced open as a loud and earnest laugh exploded from her throat. "Hee hee hoo hoo hoo!" She loudly called, the sound echoing around the booth's tight enclosure.
It felt good to laugh; natural, almost! She had no idea why she’d needed such convincing; this was the most relaxed she’d felt in years!
"There, better. Now that we've got that done; let's work on getting your face painted even more! You'll look really good with a little makeup!" Silly Sue called, and the drawer behind Fenfung opened up once again.
Fenfung turned and picked out a few large things of skin dye, returning to the mirror and giggling to herself, barely stifling the laughter in her chest so that she could have a steady hand while applying her makeup. Fennyfung's eyes began to water with mirth as she started to trace blue stars around her eyes and red spirals around her cheeks.
She finished and looked to her reflection with a huge smile, beaming with delight at her clowny appearance. Thoughts of law school and owning her own private practice were floating away just like the balloons she now loved to play with. She did a pirouette and waited for Silly Sue to respond, but no praise came.
“Well gawsh, why’s Silly Sue so…” The clown trailed off as she saw that she was alone in the room; the mirror just a mirror, and nothing more. "Huh? That's odd... FennyFun coulda sworn she saw someone else..." She smiled and shrugged. "Oh well!"
The door clicked open to the clown's side, and she skipped out from the booth with a laugh and a giggle. Whatever that booth was, it had the clown's spirits higher than they'd been in years! She'd need to go out and tell everyone about it!
