Armament: 9 x 16 inch guns, 16 x 5 inch, 48-72 Bofors 40mm AA, 56-72 Oerlikon 20mm AA. Carried three aircraft.
The Massachusetts hit the French Vichy battleship Jean Bart, moored in the harbor of Casablanca, with six shells from a distance of 26 miles during the Allied invasion of North Africa on 8 November, 1942. Only one of the shells penetrated the armored deck, however.
