Description One of three Des Moines-class heavy cruisers completed for the US Navy.
Laid down: July 4, 1945 by Bethlehem Steel at the Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Mass.
Launched: March 25, 1947
Commissioned: May 9, 1949
Served as flagship of various fleets in the Caribbean, Atlantic and Mediterranean. Never saw combat.
Decommissioned: Jan 30, 1959
Now centerpiece of the United States Naval and Shipbuilding Museum at Quincy, Mass. and undergoing restoration.
