They came in first !! A great result for Rizo's first show, hopefully he'll do some more competing this summer!

This nearly killed me. I started with a simple, unshaded image. Then I figured, 'I should at least shade the jumps and the trees.' So I did that, and then realized that since they were shaded, they needed to cast a shadow. I then did all the grass and stream detailing, since it looked weird otherwise. Next, I did the path. At that point, the only part left unshaded was the horse, and I'd been working for about three hours. It looked very odd, so I shaded the horse... but I'm pretty darn proud of it.
I especially love the details, like the squirrel in the tree, the ferns, the saddle pad, the bridle, the jump, etc.

I'll try not to make this story über-long. And yes, Charlotte has dyed her hair dark blonde-Gwen still doesn't understand why she doesn't like normal blonde.
"Are you sure this is a great idea?" Charlotte said, fighting with her stirrup leather, as Gwen held the reins.
"Of course I'm sure. Highwayman won't kill you, I swear," Gwen soothed. Charlotte's face was turning an odd shade of crimson as she struggled to adjust her stirrup. Highwayman snorted and tossed his head as she twisted in the saddle. "Stop it, you're upsetting him!" Gwen reprimanded, walking over to help. Charlotte groaned.
"If he bucks me off, I'll never listen to you again," she sighed.
"Hush. It's only your first show together, and I know you'll do great."
"Right."
"Hey Charlotte!" called Seamus, who was jogging across the field towards them, his brown hair blowing in the spring breeze. Somehow he'd found a light-blue shirt and gray pants, MSS's colors. "You're starting in ten minutes, you'd better hurry!"
"Darn it."

Ten minutes later, Charlotte was still on Highwayman's back, and they were at the starting gate. Though Charlotte had entered dozens of shows, this was Highwayman's first show, and one of her first times riding him cross-country.
Soon, they were off, flying along the course. They soared over the first jump, and rounded a curve into the forest. After splashing through a small brook, they flew over a large grass jump and headed around another curve. All was going well - both Charlotte and Highwayman were still alive.
Highwayman's hooves had just hit the ground after an intimidating log jump, when a tawny rabbit dashed out from under the hedge jump further up the trail. Highwayman threw his head in the air and sidestepped, but with encouragement from Charlotte, finally regained control and approached the jump. Charlotte held her breath as they soared over, and let out a sigh of relief as they landed. But there wasn't time to be thankful; the next jump was quickly approaching.

They rounded the final curve and popped over a small ditch before entering the field at the end of the course.
"C'mon Highwayman, this is it!" Charlotte whispered to the stallion, giving him a squeeze. He broke into a gallop, and they raced to the finish line.
Everyone cheered as she slowed him to a trot. Seamus and Gwen had magically donned blue-and-gray baseball caps, and Charlotte broke into a grin as she saw them approach.
"Great ride!"
