thats because things like "sublety" and "lowering my saturation" are foreign concepts to me xD

[link] thats right, its a tablet specifically designed for artwork. My ones getting on a bit though, 2 years of artwork and it still works ok, but the buttons on the side are a bit tetchy. So im hoping to upgrade to one of these [link]

actually i was thinking more along the lines of writing and penmanship as well as getting rid of my computers mouse since the scroll wheel on it is starting to go bad and i cant fix it. if i were a dragon for real and the mouse wasnt the computer type id just eat it lol.

happy Easter from myself and Canada.

Impressive results. Lineless painting and airbrush, great attention to scales. It is not the regular technique, so much so that I did a double- take on the artist name. Worked with Yellow and violet, which has risks and rewards.

Now I have to check out the two pages you refer!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyder117 In reply to Rekalnus [2013-03-30 09:12:19 +0000 UTC]

I confess i did use a lineart as a reference first, it wasnt completely lineless. as for the scales, well has written her scaling technique out in a book available from her store. I'd highly reccomend looking into it. you can see the results.
Used purple background to intensify the yellow, the same way you'd put a green background behind a red dragon to make it look more red. Of course you dont need a lecture on complimentary colours, but when it works, oh hell does it work!

PLease do, dude, these two artists I consider the best in their field, as do many others. Heck Leccathu actually livestreams a lot of her artwork from time to time, You can pop in, say how-do-you-do and sit back while you watch the art being created

Don't take this the wrong way but I definitely prefer this shading style to your usual methods.

It's got a smoother, more natural and defined feel to it. Whatever alteration you've made to how you draw, keep at it. If you carry this style over to future works, it will certainly improve the quality of them. I've followed you for a while now, and you've definitely improved in that time, but this is the most significant leap of yours I've seen to date.

Credit where credit is due, this looks absolutely fantastic. I hope to see more from you that looks as sharp as this does.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyder117 In reply to Akataras [2013-03-30 09:20:01 +0000 UTC]

Hmm.. thats a fair call dude, this is a pretty big step in terms of technique. But seeing more art this sharp... well id like to believe my art skill would stay this good, as do most artists. Problem is how long you can commit to the canvas, commit to getting the artwork completed. Its more a commitment than you'd think. Rest assured art of this quality will arrive here again, but i cant guarantee they'll all be THIS good.

Not getting mopey about it, im just being honest to a fellow dA member. Glad to know you thought this picture turned out well, and thanks for your words of wisdom. I will stick to this art style- lets see how that turns out. ^.=.^

The scales are amazing!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyder117 In reply to Carryn [2013-03-30 08:56:07 +0000 UTC]

the scales were each rendered (ie drawn and shaded) seperately, so each of them reflected according to how much light was being shone upon it. Its a trick i picked up from , except she uses it a LOT better

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Carryn In reply to Skyder117 [2013-03-31 21:22:55 +0000 UTC]

Wow! That sounds like it is a lot of work. Is each one a different layer?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyder117 In reply to Carryn [2013-04-01 04:22:39 +0000 UTC]

oh wow no! theres one constructor layer for each section, like the neck and the head in this picture, with a gradient placed on it. Then another layer where i sample colours from the gradient to define the scales, then a couple more layers for the shading. i think it was about... 20 - 22 layers altogether, give or take.

Carryn In reply to Skyder117 [2013-04-03 12:57:44 +0000 UTC]

Ah. That makes more sense. I haven't done a lot of digital art, but enough to know it is just as much a work of art as traditional.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Skyder117 In reply to Carryn [2013-04-04 09:29:10 +0000 UTC]

well its tpretty much the exact same process. Just a lot easier to undo errors and bad brushstrokes xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Carryn In reply to Skyder117 [2013-04-09 19:52:45 +0000 UTC]

That is true. The errors do erase easier in digital art.
