Sunny took a deep breath of the autumn air, she loved to see all the colors that the grove had to offer. The sunsets in particular were spectacular, the red hues of the sunset continuing into the night thanks to the blood red moon that hung in the sky. It was terrifying but in such a beautiful way. Pele didn't share her thoughts on that though and thought she shouldn't be going out so close to night. She would usually tag along, but Sunny had convinced her to stay back and spend some time with Mulder, who had been far too exhausted for a meandering stroll. That, and Sunny was well aware that Pele wasn't as close to Mulder as they were to her and she was hoping Pele would eventually bond with Mulder. Sunny loved Pele of course, and she loved Mulder as well and she just wanted her two friends to get along.
She was so entirely caught up in her thoughts that she failed to notice just how low the sun had gotten, as well as where exactly she was in the forest. She looked around for any sort of landmark to reorientate but only found a splatter of what looked like… paint? No. No that was ether, a huge puddle of multicolored ether. Sunny froze. The woods suddenly loomed around her and her focus narrowed in on the puddle in front of her.
Something hit the ground next to her
She looked up.
All she saw were teeth
Instinct Sunny didnt know she had flared up inside her and she ran. It was upon her in seconds, horrible warbled screeches tore from its maw as its claw came down on her. She stumbled to the side just before it hit her but it swung again. She stumbled and felt its jagged beak tear at her ear, catching the long tassel. Sunny screamed and tore herself away, dashing madly into the woods. It was talking- it was talking to her but she couldn't make sense of the words, didn't want to make sense of the words. She couldn't run much longer. In a desperate attempt to get away, Sunny flung herself into a small hole beneath a tree stump and dug deeper into what must have been an abandoned burrow. She had seen its claws. She knew it could reach her as she pushed herself farther into the crumbling dirt. She would realize much later how lucky she was that it was uninhabited, but in the moment all she could think about wasCAULIFLOWER. She knew that was the beast that chased her. In all honesty she almost thought it was a myth, some tale told to kits so they would stay away from the more reasonable dangers. Cauliflower was not reasonable. Cauliflower was unfathomable. Her ear burned and ether dripped down the side of her face.
Cauliflower shrieked somewhere nearby and Sunny shoved her paws against her mouth in a desperate attempt to muffle her breathing, her eyes wide and locked onto the entrance of the burrow. Her breath came in shallow gasps that were far too loud in the cramped space and she could do nothing to stop her panic.
Slowly time passed.
She hadn't heard Cauliflower in what seemed like minutes or hours or days. She couldn't move, couldn't leave her safety until light, sunlight, not the nauseating red of the moon, crept into the hole and she crept out on shaking legs ready to dart back in at a moment's notice. There were no signs of Cauliflower and the tightness in her chest lessened. Now that daylight filled the forest she was able to gain her bearings again and started off in a direction she would hopefully get help in. Some time passed before she heard her name being called somewhere in the distance. For a second it sounded like the distorted caws of Cauliflower but she realized it was Mulder and who she thought must have been one of the Den Mamas calling out for her. She bolted through the last stretch of trees to safety.
