He would die from blood loss even if his assailant let him live. Not that it mattered, though. Nothing mattered, as far as he was concerned. He wouldn’t be missed. In fact, Kii would be delighted…

For a moment, it stung to know that his own mother would be happy to see him dead. But that, like every other scrap of hope, was shattered in an instant by his reality. He closed his eyes as his attacker flicked open a narrow, sleek blade.

“Don’t worry. I know how to kill quickly…”

Rune felt the weight lift from his throat, as the boy stood, dragging him into a sitting position and tilting his head back with the blade. “You had no role in this family, anyway.”

The knife touched his throat, and despite the fact that one of his own family was about to kill him, Rune felt unusually calm.

Maybe death would be easier.

It couldn’t be harder than living.
