So, I watched this movie before and I didn’t think it was that good, but now that I watched it again, my opinion for it has changed, but before I go more into detail about it, as always, I’ll talk about the plot.
It begins with people, even parents with their kids visiting the Australian Zoo and they were looking at all the cute animals, especially a koala named Pretty Boy. Then a young girl named Dolores wanted to see the uglier animals, so she went to the ugly animals' section and got scared by a crocodile named Jackie jumping out of the water. Then we meet our main characters, a spider named Frank, a scorpion named Nigel, a thorny devil named Zoe and a snake named Maddie. Then the zookeeper named Chaz came into the room and prepared the animals for a show he has and told Maddie that she was special and also told her to smile and she showed her fangs. Then the show started, and it was hosted by Chaz and his son Chazzie. He told the audience how dangerous and deadly these animals are and showed off Jackie, Frank, Nigel, Zoe and even Maddie for the first time and when she saw the people fearing her and calling her a monster, she felt very sad and self-conscious. That night, Jackie comforted Maddie, telling her that she was special and didn’t need to worry about what the people thought. Then Maddie sings a lovely song that her mother used to sing to her, although she never knew who she was as Chaz found her when she came out of her egg. Jackie then told the other animals about the outback, especially the big rock Uluru and said that one day they’ll meet their families there. One day, Chazzie fell into Jackie’s water, and she was trying to save him, but the people thought she was attacking him, so she got taken away and Maddie, Frank, Nigel and Zoe felt very sad without her. That night, Chaz came into Chazzie’s room and told him that he’s proud of him for facing Jackie like that. Back at the zoo, Maddie got the idea that they should all try to get back to the outback. So, they all tried sneaking out of the zoo, but ran into Pretty Boy and he almost got them caught till Nigel accidentally stung Pretty Boy, knocking him unconscious and so they managed to sneak out while dragging Pretty Boy with them. They used a nest to get across the water to the city till they saw a shark and, in a panic, tried to paddle the nest away with no avail and at that same time, Pretty Boy woke up and yelled at Maddie. Then this shark turned out to be a friendly shark named Jacinta and he was with the U.S.S (Uglies Secret Society) and even taught them the password, “I’m ugly, you’re ugly, we should all be this ugly. Ugly is the new beautiful.” Then after that, he helped them get to the other side whilst Chaz and Chazzie discovered that Maddie, Nigel, Zoe and Frank, along with Pretty Boy were missing and at first, Chaz thought that he should call Animal Control, but Chazzie gave him the bright idea of hunting them down and so, he took his advice. Meanwhile, when Maddie, Frank, Zoe and Nigel got to the city, they were about to continue their journey back to the outback, when Pretty Boy chose to abandon them and went off on his own, which turned out to be a bad idea since people only saw him as dangerous, so while they were chasing him, he ran back to Maddie, Frank, Zoe and Nigel and they all ended up being surrounded by the angry mob, so Maddie says the password for the U.S.S before the people had the chance to beat them up. In the sewer, they came across black widow spiders, who showed them a way out of the sewer, through a big pipe with water coming from smaller pipes and ended up on a window washer elevator. However, Pretty Boy accidentally hit the “down” button ‘cause for some reason, he thought it was a button to call his groomer and a second later, Zoe pressed the other button to stop it. At the same time, Chaz and Chazzie discovered them and tried to catch them, but Pretty Boy, Maddie, Zoe, Nigel and Frank quickly disguised themselves as accessories on a lady. Then while crossing the street, Pretty Boy turned to a billboard about his supposed death and it made him cry, but then made him angry when he found out he’s been replaced by a quokka called Giggles, especially with his snuggly (which he calls his blanket). Then he was saved from being run over by Maddie and Zoe catapulting Nigel and then they all went on the street too and Chazzie discovered them again but managed to escape them by holding onto a school bus. Chaz was about to give up when he saw Chazzie memorize the license plate and track the bus down and even called Chaz the coolest dad in the world. The animals ended up at Western Plains School and went into the science classroom, where they met two toads named Doug and Doreen and they clearly showed love for each other, so Maddie and Nigel let them both out of their cages and they kissed and as repayment, they told them about the bus that’s going to the outback, so Maddie, Frank, Nigel and Zoe went to look for the bus and Nigel figured out which one was the right one by looking at the girl with the blue bow and Pretty Boy was knocked out again by Nigel when he complained. They got on the bus, only to discover that it was the wrong one, so they made their way to the right one by riding on a skateboard and swinging on a rope of the flag and they thought they lost Pretty Boy, but he ended up on the bus too. When Maddie was excited about her and her friends being with their families, the others feared about the families not liking them and even said they don’t know the meaning, so Maddie said that it could mean people who love you no matter what and it made them realize that they’re kinda like a family and it was a really sweet moment. However, they discovered Chaz and Chazzie chasing after them, so they dived inside the bus, freaking out the kids and bus driver and they ended up in a bag that belonged to the girl with the blue bow, and she was nice enough to hide them from Chaz. Chaz then held up Pretty Boy by the legs, thinking he was dead and threw him out of the window and off the cliff. Then the girl with the blue bow let Maddie, Nigel, Zoe and Frank escape from the back of the bus and she also knew exactly why they were there. Then they fell off the cliff and landed on Pretty Boy. Even though Pretty Boy was just thrown off the cliff, he still wanted to go back and didn’t listen to Maddie when she tried to convince him that he wouldn’t and to go back to the outback with them and Pretty Boy responded harshly saying no one will ever love them and then Maddie and Pretty Boy got into an argument with Maddie asking Pretty Boy why he’s so mean and that everyone loves him instead of him being treated like a freak and Pretty Boy saying that his looks kept him going and he then cried. Maddie then asked Pretty Boy if he ever wondered what life could be like outside and he responded by laughing at Maddie’s face. Then from on top of the cliff, Chaz fell down and landed on top of the animals (except for Pretty Boy). Chaz then discovered that he caught Maddie and was about to inject her with some sort of liquid, till Pretty Boy saved her by saying the U.S.S password and then three Tasmanian Devils came and attacked Chaz and so the animals got away, and Chaz got away from the Tasmanian Devils by climbing a rope that Chazzie threw down and also in that moment, Maddie and Pretty Boy are now friends. Then Chaz confessed to Chazzie that he lied to Chazzie his whole life and even revealed that he wasn’t even Australian and the reason he faked the whole thing was because he saw a cool Australian guy on TV and ended up acting like him and also said that hunting the animals could make up for all the lies. However, Chazzie is now starting to have second thoughts, but Chaz isn’t giving up now. Meanwhile, the Tasmanian Devils are guiding the animals through a cave full of bats and then had some dung beetles help them by disguising themselves as the dung, rode on a couple of bush pigs, swam with a platypus and finally made it back to the outback. However, Chaz enlisted help from a biker gang in a bar. While looking up at the stars in the night sky, Maddie sings the song again with animation this time and it’s showing Maddie as an egg getting lost and found by Chaz and I think it makes it more emotional than before. Pretty Boy said to Maddie that it was nice that Maddie has something to remember her mother buy and she asked him if he remembers his mother and Pretty Boy said she was hit by a car after he was born, and Pretty Boy felt sympathy for Maddie when she said that she thought Chaz cared about her when he only wanted her as a monster for his show. And then Pretty Boy began to accept being Maddie's friend before both of them sleep together. The next morning, when the animals were on their way to meet their families, Pretty Boy abandoned them once again for other koalas in a tree. The rest of them made it to Uluru, where they saw other animals that looked like them, but then they ran away because of Chaz and the biker gang, and when Maddie ended up with Chazzie, he freaked out but then saw that Maddie was shaken up too. However, Chaz then caught her, along with Frank, Zoe and Nigel. However, Chazzie pushed Maddie’s box out and it broke while her friends stayed. Maddie tried to get help from the other outback animals and they were scared away when Pretty Boy threatened them. He then offered to help Maddie ‘cause things at the koala tree didn’t go too well and even said he belongs with her and also changed U.S.S’ name to “Unique and Special Society” and he and Maddie shared a hug. They managed to catch up to Chaz’ Jeep by driving a fire truck and as Chaz tries to shoot them, Maddie got up onto the ladder and made her way the glass container but couldn’t get her friends out. They managed to get out themselves by Zoe calling Nigel beige and although there was a sticker on the box that says, “ssalg elbakaerbnu”, his high-pitched scream broke the glass. When the ladder was spinning uncontrollably, Pretty Boy landed on one of the bikers and when he was about to kill Pretty Boy, Maddie saved him by flashing her fangs at the biker, making him fall off and allowing both of them to take control of the bike and even let Frank, Nigel and Zoe on and when they tried to escape, Chaz was trying to shoot them with a bazooka with Chazzie begging him to stop, and he was only stopped by the other outback animals attacking him and the bikers. Eventually, Chaz, Maddie, Pretty Boy, Nigel, Frank, Zoe and Chazzie ended up on a ladder with Chazzie dangling at the end over a cliff and so Maddie, Pretty Boy and Chaz saved him and Chaz and Chazzie shared an emotional embrace whilst Pretty Boy thought Maddie was dead when it was just her old skin and Chaz also hugged the animals. Then they found out that Jackie was there and turns out she’s been watching over them this whole time and the movie ends with all of them living back in the outback.
So as always, before I talk about the characters, I’ll talk about the plot. So, like I said before, my opinion for this movie is different than what I first thought of it, and I think it’s pretty great. The story’s nice, the humor is funny, the animation’s also cool, and I think they even did a great job with the voice acting and I even like the messages, like, “ugly is the new beautiful” and “the people that love and care for you are your family”. So yeah, I enjoyed it way more than before and I’d give it an 8/10. Alright, now let’s talk about the characters.
The characters I chose to talk about are Maddie, Nigel, Frank, Zoe, Pretty Boy, Chaz, Chazzie and Jackie. Maddie (played by Isla Fisher) is a likable main protagonist, and you can’t help but feel bad for her when Chaz used her for the show and the people calling her a monster and it’s even nice to see that she has big dreams, like her whole idea of getting back to the outback to meet her true family and it’s even nice to hear the song her mother used to sing to her. Nigel (played by Angus Imrie) is also a nice character, who’s quite cute, caring and also panicky. He’s also my favorite character and I thought it was funny that he broke the glass box with his high-pitched scream. Frank (played by Guy Pearce) is also a cool and funny character, and I didn’t say this while explaining the plot, but throughout the movie, he’s been trying to look for a mate and unfortunately by the time he was back at the outback, mating season ended. He does have nice dance moves, though. Zoe (played by Miranda Tapsell) is a character who’s nice to her friends and supports them, but can sometimes be a little rough, especially to Pretty Boy. She’s still a good character, though. Speaking of Pretty Boy (played by Tim Minchin) is at first, snobbish and mean, but later befriended the other animals and even helped them, especially Maddie and it’s nice to see him develop and even when he’s a snob, he’s also kinda funny and also pretty cute, but I guess that’s because he’s a koala. Chaz (played by Eric Bana) is honestly, not the best character nor antagonist, especially since he did lie to Chazzie his whole life, although he does actually love and care for him and when he fessed up, he thought the idea of catching the animals would make up for everything and it’s sweet how much he truly cares, even when he’s the antagonist. Speaking of Chazzie (played by Diesel La Torraca), he could also be seen as not being a very good character, although he’s only a kid and he’s a little bit better than Chaz and just like Chaz, he cares very much about him and even when he was told the truth, he didn’t seem too upset about it and he also cared more about the animals near the end, even saving Maddie by pushing her box off the Jeep (although not her friends’ box), which was also nice to see. And Jacki (played by Jacki Weaver) is also a really nice, motherly type character who cared for the animals, calling them her babies, telling them about the outback and even though it was sad to see her get taken away, it was nice that they get to see her at the end and she even said she’s been watching over them this whole time. So yeah, most of these characters are good while a couple of them have flaws, but still quite good.
