Yeah. Plus, it might be possible for the accidents and incidents in real life that SleeperAgent1 made to be adapted into some Fan-Made Thomas and Friends episodes.

Yeah I mostly consider the Dalby era to be a 'state of flux' for what the engines looked like. This isn't so much due to his various errors as such but when you combine them with how the engines would of been built/arrived on Sodor you still need X amount of years for them to be rebuilt at Croven's Gate, Crewe or wherever else for them to eventually resemble the illustrations.
A classic example of where I would overrule illustrative canon would be with the red engine that tries to push Henry out. Rather than struggle to find a James lookalike I would just as soon swap it ( or the original Middleton Pacific ) for say a Midland 0-6-0 engine, as they and the Furness had to lend out a number of their engines to help operate the NWR throughout WW1 and for a little afterwards too.

Reading the   comment you made, you're onto something about dalby' s pictures and why the engines looked different later on. It fits in perfectly; both fictitious and and factually.

Well in all honesty that isn't a Cumbrian K2, its a Cambrian Large Stewart that i've mirrored to make it look more like Edward's prototype  Basically though the real story was that due to thick fog an engine shunting passed a signal at danger, which resulted in this unfortunate mess-i'll see if I can re-find the book for the details.
As far as Sodor is concerned though I think the edit makes a good open ended back story for Edward, as this sort of thing never happens to him in his older and wiser days. I'm not really a slave to Dalby's illustrations for what the engines looked like in the early days but still I reckon the 20s/30s is about where I have for it. If in the late 20s to 30s you could also say this moment is when it is decided to alter his design a bit instead of giving him just another overhaul ( i.e. he gets a raised boiler with a superheater like in most of the illustrations ). As the front end of his chassis is crumpled up this does also make a good excuse to have his guard irons ( one of his originals has already fallen off ) moved to the back of his replacement buffer beam
