You shouldn't call this "poor attempt" because it's totally awesome! I wish I could digitally colour half as good as this!

If you did this with no knowledge of what to do, you're gonna be great when you get some practice under your belt. Sometimes you gotta run before you can walk and photoshop is one of those things where you gotta find yourself by hacking at it. Most everyone has a different way of coloring things, some will work for you and some won't. Be patient with yourself, try everything at least once, and you'll find what does work for you soon enough. Take it from a guy who's read tons of coloring tuts.

If you haven't done so, try shading in grayscale then adding color to the finished work. Doing the work this way first sometimes makes it easier for me to make sense of lights and shadows Check this out [link] They're working with a photo but the principle is mostly the same when working with art.

If I don't feel like doing things like that (I'm a gemini so I change my mind all the time ) I start off with two colors: the lightest and the darkest shade of the surface I'm working with. Don't worry about subtle colors until later (if at all). Just set your flow and opacity of your brush and eraser to what's comfortable for you.

Got more long-winded than I intended but don't forget to study the pros no matter how much it hurts!

For a first attempt, this is pretty hardcore. I look forward to future "attempts."

(glad you're back and busy )

You're color choices are really well done. The blending of the colors is the only thing that takes away from the piece. What program are you using? Are you using a tablet or mouse?

I actually really like it. I'm not sure what you see wrong with it , but then again the artist is the worst critic.

I think the colors that you picked make the picture so alive and wonderful. I really like the shading that you did and the movement is fantastic!

Maybe if we knew what you didn't like about it we could see where you're comin from to be able to give you advise.

Custom brushes are your friend when it comes to Photoshop.

Check out these free brushes from EraserX: [link]

He's one of the best colorists in the comics biz, imho.

That being said, I really love this piece. Your colors have a really great, creative quality that only someone discovering photoshop for the first time can achieve! Keep playing around and having fun!

It's way better than I could do. I downloaded Photoshop, tried to use it and ended up crying in a huddled heap.

i can definitely see your painting method coming through in your digital work

i would suggest working in transparency like your paintings as well as coloring your linework
