Dinovember 2022 day 30
Many thanks to cordefr and rift09 for the suggestion!
Another famous dinosaur, but laymen will picture the wrong animal! The raptors from the OG Jurassic Park movie are way too big, and more closely resemble larger dromaeosaurids like Deinonychus and Utahraptor. Furthermore, the JP raptors are shown with scales (as was custom at the time) but we now know they were feathered, as evidenced by quill knobs on the ulna.
Velociraptor must have been nasty little critters, who would have been capable of tackling prey larger than themselves. A wonderfully preserved fossil found in 1971 shows Velociraptor fighting with a Protoceratops, an animal almost 10 times its weight. It's been long thought these were pack hunters (as shown in Jurassic Park), but evidence of such behavior is slim.
Tomorrow I'm going to post a Tree Of Life for this year's Dinovember and that'll be the end of that. Thanks again to all for the suggestions!
