This is really nice! I love how you fit Wan's spirit allies into the face of the lion turtle. The dark spirits are also great in the center of the picture-- it makes it seem like the good spirits are in a little oasis, while those outside the protective area of the lion turtle's face get exposed to the Vaatu. I love how Vaatu is in the background and Ravi comes in asymmetrically on top of him. Great picture!!

as much as I loved learning of the avatars origins the story dose clash a bit with the origins of earth bending in the last air bender.
in the last air bender it was said that people learn earth bending from badgermoles but this story it seems people learnt bending from the lion turtles.
but I don't care much maybe I missed something or if it was a mistake by nickelodeon then I can for give them

There's not that much of an inconsistency. Wan, for example, used fire from the lion-turtle, but got the bending style of Firebending from watching the movements of a dragon during his time in the spirit-filled wilderness.
It's possible that Oma and Shu, the first Earthbenders, had the ability in their bodies from ancestors that once contacted the lion-turtles, but learned the proper movements to harness the element from following the badgermoles.

that's a good theory very possible
I've also come up with a another theory
but I don't think I could put it into words right now
or at lest understandable words
bit tried right now

I think I can answer this one for you!
The people learned the skill from the different lion-turtles, but they perfect their skill by looking at the animals that too have the ability to bend and master that element.
You can see this when Wan learns to let fire-bending becoming the extend of his body when he is thaught by that dragon at the pound (dragons were the original fire-benders)
I'm pretty sure that badger-moles, sky-bisons can follow this explanation as well.
The only problem with this theory is kwi and la, the push and pull spirits at the north pole. Legends spoke that they teached the first waterbenders to push and pull the water. I still think however that the original waterbenders got the skill to manipulate water from their lion-turtle, but only learned to use it by the 2 helpfull spirits.
now that I come to think of it, kwi and la are contrasts of each other, just as Vaatu and Raava are.. They however aren't plunged into conflict, but simply swim next to each other...
They are also the only spirits that seems to be permanently present in the fysical world, and not just the spirit world... perhaps they are the guardians of the portal?..
With also the big exception of Hei Bai, the Panda spirit.. He too was aible to go to the fysical world.. certainly at the period of the solstice... He too has the black and white markings on his body however, just as Kwi and La have together... hmm...
I like to speculate!

I like to speculate too! and I think I found a few possible answers
first off though it has been a while since I saw the ep but I'm pretty sure Katara said that Oma and Sho (Not sure if I spelt the names right) became the first earth benders or invented earth bending
now that got me thinking Katara is reading the story in a dark ancient cave
maybe she read it wrong or it was damaged so she had to use her imagination to fill in the blanks
it could have said something like they became the best earth benders or the strongest
then there's the possibility that the people of Oma and Sho's clans didn't know about the lion turtles and really did believe that Oma and Sho were the first people to earth bend
my last theory is that Oma and Sho learnt how to bend before people started living on lion turtles and maybe the first water benders learnt from Kiw and La at about the same time
perhaps one of the conditions of living on the lion turtles was that the people had to give their bend to the turtles
but if that were true then the city of Omasho would predate the first avatar and some people would have had to live there instead of moving in with the lion turtles
so this last theory I think is possible but unlikely
and as for what you said about spirits in the physical world maybe all spirits aside from Vaatu can move freely between the two words but for the most part don't out of respect for Wan's choice
or maybe Wan's blockade only make it hard but not impossible for spirits to escape
Okay I think that's enough for now but I'd like to hear what you think about all this

slifertheskydragon In reply to Lyswen [2013-10-23 18:27:17 +0000 UTC]
I think that the humans given elemental powers by the lion turtles may not have all survived (as seen by Wan's friends being killed by the spirits) so at least for firebenders, they had to start from scratch in the form of the sun warriors etc and that every human has the potential to element-bend but it depends on their spirit to awaken this ability?
But then I agree with the "given by lion turtles" but "refined by spirits/watching animals" to focus bending

KoStorms In reply to slifertheskydragon [2013-10-26 18:50:18 +0000 UTC]
Remember the lion-turtles stated that they will no longer "give" humans the power of the elements. I think that means that from then on anyone who didn't already have the power never had the chance to receive it. I personally believe that supports the said original benders like the badger-moles and dragon masters. Humans after Vaatu was imprisoned had to learn bending from those sources. If this actually makes sense then it would honestly explain most of the questions on this. Ex. Humans can't get fire bending from the lion-turtles so they notice dragons using fire and begin to watch and mimic them.

slifertheskydragon In reply to KoStorms [2013-10-29 07:12:34 +0000 UTC]
right, the humans who had left with firebending were killed by the spirits so technically the firebenders given power by the lion turtles were killed, but the airbenders were not and most likely passed down their ability genetically as well as learning from the air bison.
the earth and water benders probably had to learn via the animals by the same logic.
i'm curious how the sun warriors place in the timeline though
