Description I went to Smokey Mountain with Dae ~dae-mon1 last March 3, 2008. It's a semi-isolated place in Tondo, Manila where garbage is dumped daily by thousands of trucks. About 25,000-30,000 people live there and even though some houses are far from the mountains of trash, an unpleasant smell and a misty smog lingers around the whole place.

We met some kids around the area who were giddy to have their pictures taken. Most of them were barefoot and were climbing the garbage heaps, like stepping on and touching garbage was a normal thing. They also seemed to be immune to the smell already.

I heard their situation was even worse a few years back. Now, proper housing and recycling facilities already surround the area, fortunately. Glad to know the government's doing something about it. (!)

There were two particular little boys who caught my attention. I posted the other one before and he was best pals with this little guy. This was a candid shot I took of him going down a little hill of sorts. On top of the hill was where all the garbage were. It took me a long time to figure out where all it was. There were some grown-ups with large plastic bags who kept on going back down and up again.

Touching.

Not everywhere, is Gov.s helping probs such as this, in fact my Guv probably causes E-Waste probs in CHina. I am sad for their terrible Earth quake catastrophe as well.

I love how the dotty texture of the plants behind him make it feel so whimsical, but a dark, twisted kind of whimsical because of the actual subject and setting. Ang ganda!

Very good work, slumberdoll-san. Your photography is exquisite since you capture the beauty of everything you see, even in the most unexpected places

I hope that people will not only admire these kinds of pictures of yours but also feel compelled to do something about the situation of the less-fortunate ones. Keep up the good work and I hope you are able to, or rather continue to inspire people like me to be as good as you and be more socially responsible ^_^

Community service? We had a gawad kalinga in Payatas, and yeah... It's really really amazing how people still manage to live in such conditions... and are forced to live in these conditions... Totally different from this though... I mean, I've been close to smokey mountain before and it's totally different from payatas. I mean, sure, proper housing, that I could see, but living and usually making a living close to the mountain just shows how the country's just covering up a problem instead of realizing a proper solution to it... Sure, the trash is far far away, but it's still... There! And the sanitation facility's dandy, but there's the possibility of improper maintenance, or corrosion of the facility. This is relief, and not solution... It's like trying to cure cancer with anesthetic. Pain's not there, but the disease is still destroying.

Yeah, apologies for ranting here of all places, but the possible backstory of the person in the photo, and what's happening around the subject of the photo at the time before, during, and possibly after, the photo was taken revolves around the issue discussed above. I mean, *it bites* or *it's unpleasant* doesn't even begin to describe the emotions one is supposed to feel, knowing what's really going on.

so yeah. ten points for the great photo. It captures the emotion, and everything, but I really hope people get what's behind the picture.

It's ideal for me because I don't like changing lenses a lot. The sharpness is okay. I'm lucky I got a really good copy.
