USN after the cold war it was forseen that USS Long beach was considered still useful for another 40 years with heavy modifications allowing to use more modern systems. by 2003 the approval of the budget costing around 12.3 Billion Dollars USS Long beach would be refitted armed with a newer generation of AEGIS system and the vertical launch systems, by 2006 the ship would be finished and still continues operating the Mediterranean for peacekeeping operations.
