This is moments before the roof collapses on top of Haji. He turns to Saya (held back by Kai) and says "Nankurunaisa", the phrase Saya's dad always said."Live for today, but look forward to tomorrow."
They think Haji is most likely dead, until they find the rose on the steps to the Otonashi family tomb. After saying nankurunaisa, he looks at Saya and says:
"I love you."
