For my sister Catherine's birthday. <3
God, what to say about this. I have no idea. It's Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space, and he's about to go on another Space Adventure.

This was a perfectly normal painting, about to be finished within plenty of time yesterday at about 5pm. In a fit of inspiration I suddenly decided to delete everything except the sketch layer and start fresh ... with newspapers.

Used here are: clippings from three different papers, published on the day Yuri came back from orbit, letters clipped from any old newspaper I could find to make the CCCP, a photo of a black champagne glass for the helmet, a door handle, a piece of tinfoil, an amber stone and a piece of a compass for the bits on the front of his suit, all from various magazines, parts of a zipper, a stock photo of the Earth, and some more newspaper clippings to make the phrase "LET'S GO!" in Russian.
(I hope I got all the letters right. *frets*)

All assembled and manipulated in Photoshop CS3.

The background was painted myself. I used ~Rabieshund 's star brushes and =Princess-of-Shadows ' vintage grunge textures .

I think both of them are interesting in different ways.

The whole shebang took me about seven hours, without breaks. (I was working until about two in the morning. God.)
... but despite all that, it was incredibly fun, and different, and Cath seemed to liked it. So it's all good. <3
