Description Self-portrait, based on a sort of "out-of-body" experience. It was summer 2005 - I was taken into a general hospital in St. Petersburg after going into anaphylactic shock.

This was my first attempt at painting with watercolours. We only had two hours to complete our work, so it's a little rough. Learned a lot from it, though.

I know my original work is never too popular - but comments here will be very much appreciated. <3

I... really don't know what to say. Except- thank you, so so much. I'm really glad to hear that.

And I'm so sorry for your loss.

Sorry for the late reply, I've been pretty busy. xP

Anyway...

You're welcome. <3

I think I'm just weirdly attatched to it... it's cool like that. xD

Thanks. At least, I hope, she's at peace now.

It seems like I always have to make my comments quick, but I'm off to Florida in five minutes for that Good Ol' Turkey Day I told you about last year!

This sent shivers down my spine, and I simply love the feet. There can be a lot said for just a slightly different position. I'm afraid I can't give much constructive criticism, I know almost naught about water colors D:

Was that when you were on the IV for weeks? T.T

Ooh, yeah! How was it? Did you have fun? 8D
...Assuming you're back by now. *LATE REPLY LIKEWHOA* D':

Thank you so much. I always love reading your comments c':
Actually, it was just for the one night XD; I was a bit out of it for a good while afterwards, though...

As someone who used to be a watercolor artist, I can say I really enjoy your brush technique. It creates a really cool effect, like a blurred photo.

And who says we don't enjoy your original work? I thoroughly enjoy it.

I'm glad you like the blurred effect - I wanted it to look a little bit dream-like, I guess~ cx

I thank you for sharing your experience with the world in the form of this piece. I know your comments on it are a little blase, but an experience that truly shakes your whole being is hard to convey, and I thank you for this. It's truly beautiful.

I try to comment as little as possible on my own work outside of the technical aspects of the piece, so people are free to make up their own minds about what's going on.

Your original should be more popular.
I like how you can't see your face, showing how you're looking towards the light, not back at what has happened. I like the IV, because it shows you're still attached to the here and now but you know something is going to come and get you out of here.

Excellently done.

Don't worry, it's not something people tend to know much about XD;

Anaphylaxis is basically a severe allergic reaction - the heart overworks itself and the airways begin to close, along with all sorts of other nasty symptoms.

KMD2 In reply to snailtamer [2008-11-27 22:38:29 +0000 UTC]

You're welcome.
Oh, ow. Thanks for telling me. That must've been painful. Do you know what triggered it? You don't have to tell me, I'm just wondering.

snailtamer In reply to KMD2 [2008-11-28 21:04:58 +0000 UTC]

I do know indeed!
Our friend/guide in Russia gave us a box of chocolates, and in some lapse of judgment (just because it'd been almost eight years since my last reaction and we weren't even sure if I still had the condition or not) I had some of them.
Turned out later they were full of hazelnuts, peanuts and whatever else have you.

We're a lot more careful, now. XD;;

KMD2 In reply to snailtamer [2008-11-28 21:29:19 +0000 UTC]

teehee, I meant that I'd wanted that kinda out-of-body experience. How does it feel?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

snailtamer In reply to mrawgirl09 [2008-11-25 16:38:38 +0000 UTC]

Oh, well - I don't know how it feels for other people, but it felt awfully scary for me. XD;;
I'd been in a great deal of pain and felt like I was being burned alive - then suddenly everything went very quiet and cold and I had no idea where I was or who was with me.
I had this sensation of being lifted up away from the room and feeling myself about to die.

I learned afterwards that the "sense of impending death" is a symptom of anaphylaxis, but it was really... weird. Profound, I guess. Like people say they've stared Death straight in the eyes - it sounds silly as hell, but that's how it felt.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mrawgirl09 In reply to snailtamer [2008-11-27 10:27:15 +0000 UTC]

D8.. THAT seems scary... Oh my god... wow.. I still say you're one of the lucky ones to feel it... Or not, cause of that creepy feeling.. Wow... I have this similar thig... but it's that I don't experience close death... well, I do, but I always escape it...

I've never dreamt of dieing.. the problem here is that I always dream of killing people. sometimes to the mass... sometimes murder... They all involve a LOT of blood. Yup... NEVER had a dream where I wasn't glad I woke up... even when there wasn't any blood, my dreams are always creepy... Maybe I should try drawing them..? Eheh..

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

snailtamer In reply to mrawgirl09 [2008-11-27 18:23:36 +0000 UTC]

It was incredibly painful, terrifying and on top of that I almost died. So, er, I don't count myself terribly lucky for having experienced it :/

I don't read too much into dreams, myself. The mind can produce some seriously weird stuff, but unless it's seriously affecting waking life, I wouldn't worry about it.

(I've had night terrors since I was tiny, so I understand. If I let them get to me in reality, it'd just be giving myself more to worry about than I need.)

mrawgirl09 In reply to snailtamer [2008-11-28 02:24:40 +0000 UTC]

Hahahah!! Probably. the notes ... I mean questinos underneath the comments are actually derived from those dreams... XDDD Oh well... I didn't mean that you were lucky to have experienced near death... pain... etc... but I mean that you've had such a unique experience... XDD Anyways. You're so skillfull for being able to get that kind of effect from water color!!! XDD I can't seem to use watercolor for my life...

DarkLordSnicklefritz [2008-11-24 05:48:41 +0000 UTC]

Wow. Watercolor is a really tricky medium, but I think the roughness adds to this one. I've never had an anaphylactic shock-type out-of-body experience, but i imagine it would be kinda like that.

I really like the watercolors!^^ I don't know exactly why, but they add to the 'out-of-body' feelings, since I've always thought things might be all blurry-ish and such. (Yeah, I'm GREAT with words XD; )

Oh, I remember you telling me that story! Gods, that must have been scary for you!

Watercolor has never been my strong suit as an artist -- I always found the medium difficult to control and too much work for a small result. Of course, this is BEFORE I discovered the incredible work of Amy Brown and the artistic phenom she launched. It was incredible then, and it's incredible now.

Now this is your first attempt, you say? Well, I say it's very solid one. There is room for growth -- there always is. But should you decide to go in that direction, I daresay you already have one hell of a foundation to get you started. Your backlight shading is good, and only a touch screwy in a few places. Please continue to explore this method! I'd love to see what else you do with it!

In this same vein, go look up Amy Brown. She broke the notion that watercolor artists don't make it big -- and her techniques, while unorthodox, are also very valid. Go see if you can pick up some tips from what she writes on herself. You never know!

snailtamer In reply to RivisIndigoEmporium [2008-12-01 21:29:19 +0000 UTC]

*nodnod*

I'm finding it a bit temperamental - sometimes it does just what I tell it to, others it just makes a big mess. But I guess that's what practice is for XD;;;

Thanks for the comment! I had a little gander at Amy Brown's website - and I have to say, her stuff looks pretty darn impressive. Will have to keep it as a reference point for new techniques to try out in the future. Thanks for sharing! c:
